Bad, bad, bad experience at A Tea Affair! So bad I hardly know where to begin. But here goes: 1. You'd better make a reservation at least a day in advance or you'll be treated like a second-class citizen. Because I was a walk-in, my waitress told me I wouldn't receive any creme brulee as all of the reservation customers received. She also told me the kitchen was "out of" egg salad, but I saw egg salad sandwiches given to the customers who arrived after I did. I later learned from the cashier that the kitchen is small and just enough food of certain types (like the egg salad and creme brulee) is made for those with reservations. Walk-in customers pay the same $30 price (very high for what is served) but receive less food. BTW, I'd learned late the night before about this tea house while visiting the area, so I had no time to make a reservation. Normally I would have. 2. My waitress told me that since I was being denied the creme brulee, I'd be given a substitute dessert. I wasn't. I received what those around me received except for, of course, the creme brulee. I don't appreciate servers lying to me. 3. The kitchen SERIOUSLY couldn't part with two more tablespoons of egg salad for me that they could have put on the extremely tiny pieces of bread that they call sandwiches? They were really THAT short of egg salad when there were only 6 other customers in the room during my entire visit? 4. The desserts were a joke. Almost all were store-bought and two of mine were stale. The kitchen is so small that the staff can't prepare homemade desserts for the high price of the high tea? One dessert, a store-bought filo dough shell, was sloppily rather than artfully filled with some artificial-tasting cheesecake-y stuff and then dotted with some red, preservative-tasting glop that that I couldn't identify. 5. How about fresh flowers on the tables instead of tall, ugly fakes? 6. This tea house has the smallest selection of teas for your meal than any tea house I've ever visited. It's a weirdly tiny selection, while tea choices abound in the shop section of the place. 7. The high tea menu mentions a choice of "salad or soup". No soup was available on this rainy day. The cashier told me the kitchen staff decides if the customer gets salad or soup. The customer can't make that choice, which should be clearly explained on the menu, but it's not. 8. When I first arrived, I told the young woman seating me that I needed to sit right away as I'd left my walker in the car so it wouldn't take up space in the tea room. She ignored my special need and kept chatting on about the menu, forcing me to continue standing in pain. I told her two more times of my urgent need to sit down (one of my legs is shorter than the other) and she finally got the message the third time. Not what I'd call handicapped-friendly! 9. When I told the cashier of the many problems I encountered, she took $3 off my bill. Hardly proper compensation for the disrespect I was shown as a walk-in customer. I guess I don't need to mention that I...
Read moreLet me first say I'm a huge advocate of Lititz, PA. In fact, I'm there often and love the diverse shopping and restaurants available. With that in mind, I chose to have a bridal shower at A Tea Affair. Bad decision.
The waitress lacked any personality and took our orders one table at a time. (We had 3 tables.) That led to her bringing out our food one table at a time. We were constantly interrupted as we tried to play games and get to know one another because of her style. Some of us were eating, some of us weren't. It was so awkward. We also had a gluten-free guest and when we told the waitress she seemed surprised (they were aware of this prior to getting there), she promptly picked up our plate of scones and took it to the back only to bring the gluten-free one back on the SAME PLATE. Completely cross-contaminated it. We tried to explain and she just didn't get it. Oh, and you're charged extra for GF ... I get that ... but only if served properly.
When it came time to paying the bill we were told there was a $125 private room fee. We were NEVER told this. The owner insisted she did and told us to check our contract. Went home to look at the contract through email and NEVER got a contract. She refused to do anything about it and told us they had to make money. Wouldn't even offer a partial refund.
The worst situation was when I was told they didn't process my $106 down payment for the shower and charged my card the full amount of the shower. Went home to find that I DID pay the $106 deposit. I left voice messages, multiple emails and texts. I NEVER got a call. Finally got in touch with the owner who said "she didn't see my emails and never got my messages" (seriously?) and said she'd investigate it. Even when she admitted to finding my $106 charge, she STILL didn't refund me. It took me having to reach out over and over and over and over again to get my money back.
This owner lack integrity. In fact, she could care less. When she has your money ... even more than deserved ... she's done with you. Had I not stayed on top of this she'd have kept my money without batting an eye. I recommend staying far away from this...
Read moreThe place is really cute inside. Pretty table settings & china everywhere. The 2 teas we tried were quite tasty & our waitress was very sweet. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. The food options were underwhelming. We did the Afternoon High Tea. 1st course came with one scone each. They seemed store bought. Fine. 2nd course says salad with quiche OR soup online. There was no soup option. The quiche was delicious but the salad was sad. Kinda like grocery store salad bar style. 3rd course online said it came with 4 tea sandwiches, French creme brulee, & 4 pastries. The tea sandwiches were bread cut outs, like with a round cookie cutter, the size of a cookie. The size was much smaller than any other High Tea I have been to, though I realize tea sandwiches are smaller. There was a hummus with shredded carrots - fine but lackluster. An egg salad one which was delicious. A pesto, slice of tomato, piece of mozzarella, & balsamic drizzle one which was good, & lastly a light smear of cream cheese & 2 thinly sliced cucumber pieces that was disappointing. Each bread round was different - white, wheat, rye, & pumpernickel. They were regular old wonder bread style, nothing homemade or artisan. No creme brulee but chocolate mousse instead, which was by far the best thing I had there. The pastries were non existent. We had an apple crumble bar each which tasted better than it looked & 4 assorted cookies that were definitely bought from the grocery store. Overall, save your $. You could buy all the ingredients at the store, make the same options at home, it'll be cheaper, make more portions, & taste better. But it was a nice experience & fun thing to do catching up with a friend. We just expected the food options to be something more...
