First time dining at Tacos Selene! Saw lots of great reviews and I love trying new, locally owned restaurants. The good: very clean restaurant, the self serve "salsa bar" was an unexpected nice touch as an option to spice up the food and fill up as many little plastic containers as desired. Friendly customer service, answered my questions about spicing up the smothered barbacoa burrito. Great flavor and size of the burrito, nice to have sour cream and other toppings standard. My reason for 4 stars -- the burrito was VERY heavy on the rice, very skimpy on the meat. The salsas were great but the ratio of meat to burrito filling (meat + rice + beans) was maybe 30%, or 3:10 to be exact. Very nice flavors, I'd rather get a smaller burrito that has mainly meat rather than filler - I guess it's just an issue of presentation, after seeing how wonderful the burrito appeared, and then learning it had around 1.5 cups of rice inside to bulk it up. Nice flavors though! For the photos, one shows the smothered burrito as ordered, the other shows the final 3 sliced portions of the burrito with almost all rice + small...
Read moreNone of the food was good, with the exception of the pickled jalapeño, carrot, and onion mixture. The food is buns... If the food were any more buns, it would be a hotdog joint.
Edit...
Came back yesterday to give it another chance. The good news is that the salsa bar with the pickled jalapenos and carrots is still there. The bad news is that it's still tasteless hot mush on a tortilla. If you were blind folded it would be hard to tell what meat mush was what. Is it carnitas? Is it barbacoa? Kinda like adult baby food.
It's what I would picture being served in an assisted living facility on Taco Tuesday. You could wait 15 minutes and change a diaper and throw it back on a fresh tortilla. It's just a never-ending cycle of plate to diaper and diaper to plate grandma and grandpa asada. I gave it 2 stars because I only spent about 20 minutes on the toilet after and not 2 days in bed.
Do yourself a favor and drive to Sheridan just north of 6th and treat yourself to Los carboncitos. Real deal Mexican food that, in contrast, is transcendent. Pure...
Read moreI was shocked at how many good reviews this place has! This was hands down the grossest Mexican food I’ve ever had! We got 2 chicken tortas WORSE torta I ever ate! The chicken is disgusting the bread is not fresh and it leaves this smell on your fingers and taste in your mouth that has now lasted 24 hours. Also ordered a burrito and it wasn’t in the bag instead got a quesadilla we didn’t order and I have to say Taco Bell’s quesadilla is better than that disgusting quesadilla. I would never eat there again, nor would I recommend it to anybody. These have to be paid reviews because there is no way anyone thinks this place is good. Nothing was finished and we couldn’t get it outside to the trash fast enough cause of the smell (same smell, stuck in my mouth and on my fingers) my mom felt sick all...
