I visited Philz on a Monday around 4:30 until closing time. This was my first time here and it was busy with people at this time.I did forget to take photos, but I will upload some the next time I go there. My assessment of my visit will go over 4 things which are cleanliness, aesthetic, employee engagement and food with an overall thought regarding if I would return to this place:
Aesthetic: The aesthetic of this place was definitely like any Philz would be. What would you describe a Philz coffee shop aesthtic as? Maybe like what we thing an art studio might look like in a movie? Like the pastel greens and browns are there, but its sanded a bit to give a rustic/modern feel? Beach workshop, Ya know? Basically any Philz. If you know, you know. There’s not a crazy a lot of space to sit as this is a coffee shop on second street, but if you go alone, you most likely can find a seat inside. A lot of people were working by themselves so it is a really nice environment to get work done and feel like everyone is trying to get work done together. I’m not sure though if its normal for people to do zoom calls in public spaces, but its definitely present here and can be very distracting if you don’t have headphones. I believe that the music here was kinda loud and that I couldn’t get work done without headphones too. The music was good, no complaints there, but like overall, this place gets loud and distracting that you will need another distraction for yourself if you are to sit inside. There is outside seatin which is nice for a lovely day, but I’m not sure how far the wifi extends to get work done.
Cleanliness: The place was clean. I did come in the evening when most of the day was done and tables and chairs have been moved around by customers. I mean the place was clean though, the floors didn’t really have anything on it and the tables where clear of everything except laptops and people’s papers. Bathrooms were exceptionally clean and easily accessible to customers.
Employee Engagement: The employees were nice, I think though that they had a long day and engagement was low. They were still nice and they got my order in really fast actually. Less talk, faster order, they did well on fast service which i actually liked.
Food: I got the Iced Coffee Rose and I’m a fan of it. It doesn’t have rose essence in it so it doesn’t taste like a perfume, but there is a floral factor in there that does add a nice addition to the coffee. I would definitely recommend this coffee if you like floral flavors. If not, maybe the Mint Mojito would better suffice.
Overall Thoughts: I like this place mainly on working atmosphere of the coffee shop and the coffee itself. There’s just a ton of people working and you feel motivate to work on your assignments or errands that you need to get done. Just remember to bring headphones because people be talking loud like theres no tomorrow. I would return to this coffee shop for sure. I am giving this place a 4/5 just because it was so loud that I couldn't focus if were to forget my headphones and I would maybe encounter people that aren't conscious of their volume. This is totally allowed lol I'm not their mom, but if you want to get work done, it...
Read moreI hate to write this review because I’ve been a loyal Philz customer for years, but my son and I had a really bad experience this morning. If you don’t want to wait an extra 30 minutes and get snapped at multiple times by staff, go somewhere else for coffee.
I placed a mobile order (nothing big, one coffee & two cookies) for 7:30. It was confirmed. At 7:30 they were slammed - clearly understaffed and way behind. Tons of stressed out people waiting. My young kid was with me and I had to run to take him to school. After 10 minutes, I asked about the status. The person grabbing food was very rude, insisted we had no order (even when I showed him on my phone), and then tossed cookies at us. The person making coffee was also very sharp. She asked if we could wait, I said no we had to leave, and she said instead of refunding the order, her coworker would make ours next. We waited another 5 minutes, her coworker didn’t make the coffee, and then she said snappily, “So you can wait? If you want a refund, you can just leave.” We left without coffee, 15 minutes after our scheduled time, and rushed to school. I have no idea if they actually put through the refund. A ton of unnecessary stress to start the day.
Two stars instead of one because management clearly put them in a tough position. But there’s no need for the attitude. And management should know they’re losing...
Read moreMy wife and I have a hobby of traveling Southern California looking for unique and special gourmet coffee shops. We've been to a many establishments over the years, but never anything like Phiz. Philz's is like a Tasting Room for coffee. It's a unique experience in that it's designed for people who really love coffee and want finding the right flavor for them to be a new and exciting experience. So everything is set accordingly, the ambience, the coffee, the menus, the shop itself and the wonderful neighborhood it resides in, for making enjoying a cup of coffee a special occasion... a gourmet coffee experience. It's quaint, it's fun, the people are wonderful and the extensive variety of coffee that they serve is just amazing. Delicate flavors and unique blends that are akin to a craft gourmet coffee festival. These exciting flavors and the wonderful, friendly attitude of the staff makes enjoying a cup of coffee a real hoot. Bill's motto is; try one of our special blends... if you don't like that blend let's pour it out and start all over again until you find the perfect...
