Where do I begin? I have been a loyal customer of Super Mex for the last 25 years. I have consistently ordered the same items from their menu. In the last year, I have noticed the quality significantly decrease and after my experience today, I do not know where I stand. I went into Super Mex tonight for just chips and salsa. Not only were the chips and salsa over $20 but the service I received from the manager in particularly was unacceptable. I was not paying attention and I simply was asking about the price and the manager immediately cut me off and told me “ We make the salsa fresh every day” and that is why the price of the salsa is more than any burrito on the menu. He then immediately walked away without allowing me to respond. I thought this was a silly response because shouldn’t all of their food be made fresh every day? When I asked another staff member about the price, they mentioned that corporate said whatever sells they should continue to increase the prices. On top of the ridiculous pricing and the terrible service I received in this interaction, I also had a major allergic reaction. I have a strawberry allergy. Why would I have a major allergic reaction from salsa that does not contain strawberries and I have been eating for over 25 years? I just overpaid for chips and salsa AND to use an EpiPen. I hope no one has an experience like this and that there are some major changes in the future, as I am devastated by this experience and what this...
Read moreWe ordered dinners to go in person. I asked Denise for shredded chicken with pinto beans. She said that the "lite" plate had shredded chicken with green rice, but the green rice could be substituted for pinto beans. She said my meal would also include a salad. I said great, please put the dressing on the side. The food arrived from a different super mex employee through the front door already packaged. The kitchen for the takeout portion was closed and not in operation. There was no verbal communication with the cooks.. A third employee told us our dinners were ready. I asked her if she was sure that pinto beans had been substituted for the green rice. She looked at the ticket and said, yes, you have beans. Well, you know the end of the story. All three items in the one meal were incorrect. It wasn't the tasty shredded chicken they usually serve, it was a bone dry and under seasoned flattened chicken breast. No pinto beans, the dry chicken was on top of green rice. The third item, the salad was drenched in dressing. The last thing, there were no chips or salsa. Maybe super Mex no gives chips or salsa, I don't know. I will return to super mex, but probably the...
Read moreSuperMex is the first place we go when we get here and it's the last place we go when we leave. Of all the SuperMex locations, we love the 2nd Street one best. Only wish we had one in Toronto! The tortilla chips are not the same little triangles you're used to, but circular fried tortillas. We tend to pop them into chunks. The salsa is really good. I've been accused of 'drinking' it since I load up my chips with it.
I'm a huge fan of #11, the Carnitas platter. No matter where I go, the carnitas can be good, but SuperMex makes it better. It has less of the super fried crunchy chunks and more closely resembles a slow-cooked, well-flavoured moist stringy pork in large chunks which melt in your mouth. The hot corn tortillas which accompany are perfect for building up your own tacos. And the platter is big enough to share.
Our friends love the ceviche and the nachos with carne asada, too.
They have a new bar area with many beers on tap. New reno is nice, but with 3 big TVs, I still prefer the back patio for a non-sports...
