The shop owner, Maggie, is such a delight and brings so much to the community - from her conscientious and sophisticated design sense to her collaborations with other designers and change-makers to her sheer positive energy. What is clear is how much heart goes into everything Maggie does for Burke, Long Beach, and the greater community. She curates the most wonderful array of clothing, accessories, housewares, beauty products, and more. Maggie curates unique and interesting clothing and accessories (beauty and homegoods, too) from sustainable and independent brands. All the clothes you buy from Burke will be the ones you wear constantly. I found one of my new favorite brand (Kowtow) from shopping at Burke Mercantile. Maggie is also a transparent and genuine human being who actually creates community instead of using it as a "marketing concept" that we are bombarded with in late stage capitalism. I didn't really understand sustainable fashion or the positive impact I could be making through ethical fashion practices until I met Maggie. I love expressing myself through the clothes and accessories I wear, but now I dress with even more pride because I know I'm contributing to positive impact. Maggie's picks are always so, so good.
