NO FOOD AFTER 9PM!!! excluding 3 greasy appetiser's. There is nothing stating the kitchen closed at 9pm! It does state you are required to buy $X amount within the first 15 mins & then again every 3hrs. If they simply made it known then people, in particular those with specific dietary needs such as ms, fibromyalgia, diabetic, gluten sensitive, ARFID (avoidant restrictive food intolerance disorder) & so many others could plan accordingly. When you have a combo of health issues & you spend an extensive amount of time planning your meals just to have an ignorant disrespectful dismal because the RESTAURANT FAILS TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS A HUGE 3HR GAP THEY DONT SERVE MEALS. DESTROYED ALL PRODUCTIVITY OF MY NIGHT. Let's start wit PARKING-VALET OR LIMITED STREET PARKING ONLY. I'm a legal consultant with a conceal/carry license therefore I have a lot of restricted sensitive documents in my vehicle. As for snooping, theft, etc., I can't trust my mother why would I trust the valet? NO WAIT LIST NOR ORGANISATION FOR SEATING.VERY UNCOMFORTABLE FOR THE DISABLED WHETHER IT BE AN ANXIETY DISORDER MOBILITY DISORDER OR ANY DISORDER WHERE YOU SUFFER PAIN WHILE STANDING. HAVING TO TWIST YOUR BODY THRU SPACES THROUGHOUT WHILE PEOPLE STARE AT YOU. LOOPING THROUGH UNTIL SOMEONE LEAVES. IMAGINE AN AGORAPHOBIC PERSON WHO FINALLY GETS UP THE COURAGE TO LEAVE THEIR HOUSE. TRANSGENDER CHECKING OUT THEIR NEW HEELS, AUTISTIC, OVERSTIMULATED, AUDITORY OR NEURO MOBILITY BALANCE INSECURE, ETC AND JUST BECAUSE YOU CANT FULLY SEE/FEEL IT WE CAN. AND JUST WHEN YOU THINK YOU CAN GO OUT AND TACKLE THE WORLD YOU GET SLAMMED BACK DOWN. ITS GOING TO BE A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE THAT SETS THEM OFF BALANCE. YOU'RE REALLY MAKING THIS A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AND VERY RESTRICTIVE. THEN ITS A GAMBLE IF YOU'LL GET A COMFORTABLE SEAT W/ APPROPRIATE TABLE SPACEE. AND WHILE THE RESTAURANT WRITES RULES THEY SELECTIVELY ENFORCE. THERE WERE AT LEAST 3 SINGLE INDIVIDUALS AT THE BACK LONG BOOOTH THAT HAD TAKEN 2 TABLES FOR THEMSElLVES! !WHEN I POINTED THIS OUT TO THE WAITRESS AND ASKED IF I COULD PLEASE HAVE ONE OF THOSE TABLES WITH SIGNS CLEARLY WRITTEN ON THEM NOT TO PULL THE TABLES TOGETHER SHE WAIVED IT AWAY. THIS IS A BIG DEAL NOT JUST TO ME BUT THE PEOPLE THAT CAME IN BEHIND ME. ARE THESE PEOPLE PURCHASING DOUBLE GOR THE TABLES THEY HAVE TAKEN?? IF ITS NOT BUSY THATS ONE THING BUT WHEN THEY ARE AT FULL CAPACITY WITH A WAIT THE WAITRESS SHOULD BE YANKING THOSE TABLES AWAY. PEOPLE RANT ABOUT THE HOMELESS TAKING UP THE TABLES AND PLUGS AT THE LIBRARY AND STARBUCKS BUT WHAT DO CALL THESE GLUTTONS THAT ARE HOGGING THE SPACE WHILE STARING RIGHT AT YOU? THE SOCIOPATH NEXT DOOR? WHO HAS NO REMORSE KNOWING FULL WELL THEY ARE DENYING THOSE IN NEED. HOW ARE EXPECTED TO ORDER IN 15 MINS? A) THEY DONT TELL YOU THAT RULE, B) THEY PROVIDE YOU A MENU FOR FOOD THEY ARE NOT SERVING WHICH AS A SERVER SEEMS PART OF THEIR JOB DESCRIPTION, C) YOU TAKE THE TIME TO PAIR YOUR DRINK WITH YOUR FOOD SELECTION D)YOU WAIT MORE THAN 15 MINS TO EVEN GET SERVICE; THE RUDE YOUNG MAN WHO COMPLETELY IGNORED YOU WHILE SERVING THE 2 YOUNG GUYS WHO ARRIVED AFTER YOU AND LITERALLY NEVER EVER ONCE CAME TO YOUR TABLE BEING DISABLED & AGE DISCRIMINATORY, E) YOU FLAG DOWN THE SWEET WAITRESS TO TAKE YOUR ORDER ONLY TO BE TOLD THEY STOPPED SERVING THE FOOD ON THE MENU SHE SUPPLIED YOU WITH F) SHELL SHOCKED YOU AUTOMATICALLY ORDER THE DRINK YOU CHOOSE TO GO WITH YOUR MEAL G) NOW YOU HAVE TO SORT OUT WHAT TO DO ALL OVER AGAIN AS YOU REQUIRE FOOD & HAVE ALREADY TAKEN NERVE MEDICATION, BLOOD SUGAR DROPPING, CANT WORK WITHOUT FOOD H)YOURE TRAVELLING, PLANNED TO EAT 8 WORK UNTIL THEY CLOSED GOING TO YOUR DESSERT CAFE YOULL FINISH YOUR BRIEF.& GO TO THE GYM & DRIVE TO ANOTHER COUNTY to FILE IN THE MORNING. Read morein theory, cafe mak is the perfect place to go to get out of the house to get some work done and be productive. in my years of coming here i have enjoyed the space for what it is: mediocre (fried & processed) food, forgettable coffee and capricious ambiance. which may or may not be a vibe depending on who you're with and which servers are on shift.
despite it all, the appeal lies in the fact that it's one of L.A.'s few late night cafes which is perfect for people like me and every now and then i'd swing by only to be left with the same sour taste in my mouth because of their shit customer service.
today was like any other time i had been to cafe mak. it's busy and there are no tables available. my friend and i do a lap to find a seat and we have 2 options, a table toward the back of the cafe on the black bench that has crumbs all over the seats, filthy napkins on the floor and multiple plates of half eaten food or take a corner of one of the 'reserved' tables in the second room near the restrooms.
our logic was that if a larger party comes in we'd just make room for them as there was plenty or find another empty table. we sat for about 15 minutes before one of the waitresses informed us we had to move. we told her there were no tables and then she cleared one near the front entrance. this was sort of annoying because we weren't bothering anyone and already found a flow but whatever. at this time we weren't using our computers yet.
once we sat at our new table the waitress was pushy and emphasized we order something. reminding us that we can push the button to place an order. she came back 3 times in the span of 15 minutes basically pressuring us to order. it got to the point where i said, "did i ring the bell?" 'no.' "okay, we will ring it once we are ready to order." this type of energy is always quite annoying because they make it as though we were free loading even though we had only been there 30 minutes and planned to be there for a few hours. a few moments later, my friend ordered a lemon tee while i still decided. the waitress once again made it a point that i HAD to order something. i informed her i was still deciding and would push the button once i was ready to order.
i eventually decide on red wine, cab -- while i waited opened my laptop. the wifi wouldn't connect. i retried until the wine and cheese arrived, i took a sip of the wine and a single bite of the mild cheddar and stuck the toothpick back in it. i tried for another 5 minutes before ringing the button and told the waitress the wifi isn't working to which she told me to restart my computer. my friend's wifi was going in and out and anytime i tried to connect, i saw over 16 iphones with their hotspots on so it wasn't a my computer issue. it was their wifi.
i restarted my computer and the issue persisted. i called another waitress and told her the issue, she went on a monologue about how they had to change the wifi two times to which i informed her of my frustration of being basically rushed into making a purchase just for their system to be down. which to me didn't seem like a fair exchange. beyond the annoyance i felt for the pushy waitress, the experience just continued to be more and. more lackluster the more i interacted with the servers and spent time there.
i basically requested a refund for the wine since there wifi wasn't working and the waitress immediately snatched the glass and the cheese with my single bite mark in it. it was so comical and cinematic... i was in disbelief. lmao instead of offering actual customer service, she just took the drink away.
as we left we were followed out and yelled at as if we stole something.... as black women this felt disgusting and i will probably...

I was very disappointed with this restaurant. I came all the way from San Diego, CA to have a mini reunion with my high school classmates (10)- one was visiting from abroad. We decided to have lunch then move elsewhere for desert and cafe mak was suggested due to their potato cake. We ordered 2 each of the tiramisu- how could you go wrong on this cake, some berry cake- it was light and just had the right sweetness to it, and their famous potato cake that I didn't find a fondness for. Each one ordered their fave coffee. I ordered the cafe Vienna which I liked very much- it was how the froth was made that I liked!- fluffy thick and not sweet.
They have limited parking. They should have a sign that parking is full. We were in two cars pulling in the one way parking. Backing out in a really very tight spot isn't an ideal situation. A simple sign that parking is full would help tremendously.
Street parking was not easy either.
The most disappointing was the service. We walked in looked at the desert. As a host, ask the guest if they are staying or ordering take out. Or if it's their first time. We were finally seated after the confusion.
They gave us this button to press when we were ready for service. A little explanation would help first timers. The person that has visited this cafe before was in the restroom. One of us pressed the button however there was no indication like a light or a buzz. We probably pressed it 3 times and when the waitress came she didn't look happy at all. After taking the orders, in a stern way she says, press the button only once because it works. Only she knows it works. We don't know. There was no indication that it did.
We even ordered take out because some were traveling back home for a 1-2 hour drive and to be given an attitude because we didn't know how to operate a button.
Finally, the matre d' had an upbeat personality. She was all smiles.
My suggestions: -Put a sign if the parking is full. -ask if guests coming in are new to the place and ask if they know how service works, how the process works. -take time to explain this button since it's different. It's not the usual where when your order is ready the devise lights up. -could u also dust the area where you keep Throw pillows. It was so dusty that a slight wind could seem to have the dust all over our food. There was a curtain- you could keep it closed. -smile- it'll get...
