I have been passing by this place for a while. The line is ALWAYS long, even under scorching 100+ F heat. And the people standing in line were primarily speaking Spanish. So, I knew this place had got to be good. I just had to try it out.
I ordered two items: (1) Burritos Chilaquiles and (2) Chilaquiles Plate, at $12 dollar each ($24 total). If you're not Mexican like me, Chilaquiles is a traditional Mexican breakfast dish served with red sauce on fresh tortilla chips and fried eggs! This place serves it with green/red sauce, plus your choice of meat.
The verdict: It's delicious.
But the flavor itself is NOT out of the ordinary. If you order chilaquiles from an authentic Mexican restaurant, you will get the same thing. What makes this place stand out is the following combination imo: Outstanding flavor + A large portion size + low cost + High-quality sauce.
With street food, it's either hit or miss. I only go to street vendors that give me a good deal. Street vendors have little overhead cost compared to a dine-in restaurant, so I want a better deal. I can tell you that the cost savings at Don Chilaquiles go directly to customers. That is why you're seeing a long line here.
Take the Avocado sauce for example. Typically, Avocado sauce served at restaurants and other street vendors is watery and heavily limed. That's because they're trying to cut costs (or being greedy) by using little avocado. At Don Chilaquiles, you'll come to find that Avocado sauce is THICK. I mean like guacamole thick. At first, I thought I was looking at a bucket of guacamole. But no, it was Avocado sauce, just like the homemade ones at my Mexican homie's house.
And the portion size is huge. For reference, think To-Go Chinese portion size (not the stingy Panda Express portion; think BIG to-go Chinese portion). For those of you who sadly never had To-Go Chinese food, think portions about 2-4 times bigger than Chipotle. We can debate whether the portion size is 2 vs. 3 vs. 4 times bigger. But we can both conclude that the portion size is stupendously huge.
Lastly, the dishes I had were $12 each. So again, delicious, largely portioned fresh food with high-quality ingredients at a generous price. I think this is why the natives are willing to wait in line under scorching heat.
That being said, I probably won't go back unless I am introducing this place to a good friend. The food is 100% worth the price. It's just not worth the wait for me :)
Oh, one more think. There is ample parking. The parking sucks. But it was free during Sunday. I can't complain about free parking in Los Angeles :) And I had a dog with me. The vendors were cool about my dog. So if you have a dog, only worry...
Read moreThis is a MUST try. Chilaquiles is my favorite breakfast even as a child and this place does it right. Kind easy service, food came out fast, great portions, and DELICIOUS
Was there in there morning around 11 and service was quick and easy. The person that took our order spoke English and Spanish. They take cash, zelle, and Apple Pay.
I got the green chilaquiles. Portions were amazing! Came with beans and eggs. I dont eat meat but it’s also included. It was fresh and amazing! Would have loved a lil more sauce and wish there was a lil more spice but it’s not enough for me to complain! Highly recommend! I forgot the flavor I got as a drink but the agua Fresca was crisp and sweet!
My gf got the chicken torta ITS HUGE and they added mole sauce inside. She was in heavennn her words “no notes” the horchata was sweet and delicious! Highly recommended this dish as well!
My friend got the asada tacos! Good amount of meat but they wished they were seasoned just a lil more. But would get them again!
Overall portions, flavor, and price are bombbb. I would say any dish you get can be split with 2 ppl and you will be more than satisfied! They also have a salsa and condiment bar which I really appreciate cause you can dress your order with the right amount of salsa, onion, cilantro, radish, lime etc. Will absolutely be back!
This is street food and they can’t control anything other than the little space they take up. The kitchen is organized and food is freshly made and ingredients are as well. Great...
Read moreThis is an outside stand with plenty of parking throughout. We went on a Sunday around 1 PM and the line was long - as we expected. It took about 30 minutes from the time we arrived to get our order which wasn’t too bad since everything is made to order.
The service is basic. Nothing special. They are busy doing their best to get the orders out and that’s seems to be the only focus.
The offer a variety of things from mulitas, tacos, chilaquiles, tortas etc. and a variety of meats. We ordered the green sauce chilaquiles with Al pastor and carnitas no eggs. The green sauce is a little spicy but perfect. The Al pastor, which they make on the topo was good just lacked a little flavor. The chilaquiles were nicely evenly coated in sauce and queens and topped with queso fresco. Flavorful, fresh and HUGE portion for only $16. 2 maybe even 3 people can eat from one plate.
We also ordered the carnitas and cuerito burrito which came with rice and beans inside cheese extra. I loved their carnitas! So tender and flavorful and perfect with their green sauce. The burrito was $12 and it was the size of my head! It was so big I couldn’t hold it to eat it so had to use a fork lol
Nothing special about the ambiance. It’s a stand on a corner with lots of people.
I definitely recommend trying this place out.
PS make sure to grab your salsas while waiting in line because they don’t add...
