I would give it five stars, but the employees lack customer service. My food experience in this establishment are; tacos de lengua (cow tongue tacos), tacos de asada (grilled meat tacos), and burrito de asada (grilled meat burrito)
Before I do go on, during this pandemic they do practice covid-19 guidelines. Six feet apart and plastic window/shields. Just about what you see everyone do
This business is located adjacent to other businesses in this "L" shaped building. The outside is taken care of. The establishment blends in a bit with the rest of the ones around it. Once you go in you get the different smells from of what they cook. I would say it is bigger than a hole in the wall. Sort of run down. I would say remodeling, or bringing it up to date would make it more inviting. The way it is set though is part of the experience. As you get in line on the right side is a window where you order your food. Then you walk to your left a couple of steps to pay for your meal. As of the last time I was there you can use the bathroom located to the far left. The menu is above the window where you order. It also has pictures. They do have a variety of other mexican favorites. Like quesadillas, nachos, and other mexican fast food items. Oh yeah the lady charging for your food can be a bit rude. Does not smile and when she takes your money or hands you the change is like the mexican mom that does not like you feeling. Those who know understand what I mean. There is an older gentleman that prepares your order. Sometimes you have to repeat to him in spanish a few times what you want. I think small orders are manageable accuracy is pretty good. Anything of two or three people sort of fall off. Ok I am done trying to paint that picture. Now for the food:
I will start with the burrito. The one that I have ordered is asada (grilled meat) not actually grilled. It is served wrapped in typical large flour tortilla used for burritos. I ask for it with everything. Which is rice, beans, meat and the hot sauce in it. They also do add cilantro and onion You can ask for it any combination. More meat less rice or beans. Less meat more rice or beans. The flavor combinations make it a good lunch burrito. They also have the super burrito which has cheese and lettuce. I normally just ask for regular burrito. If I can say it the other would be more gourmet. I like to keep it traditional. It is not soggy. To best enjoy this burrito is to eat immediately after being served. Since it is wrapped in foil it will get soggy after letting it cool down.
Tacos de lengua (cow tongue tacos) have a good flavor, but over do it sometimes with grease they dip the tortillas in before they put on the grill. It is good when it is done right. It does get your fingers a bit greasy. Best with asada not so much with this style taco. This is a taco you have to have hot. Let cool down and the flavor does change. What I saw is the way they cook the tongue is also in grease. Instead of letting it drain a bit it is put like that into taco form. Making the tortilla extra soggy and as you are enjoying the tortilla sort disintegrates. It is also served with onions, cilantro and either red or green salsa. I like the green better. I will explain in a bit.
The asada taco is done like the tongue taco. It also has cilantro, onions and your choice of red or green sauce. The meat is not greasy has flavor to it. The tortilla is kissed with oil to give it flavor, and so it does not stick to the grill.
For the sauce (red) it is very spicy, They come in smaller than a shot glass plastic container. This stuff is for sure fire. Have something like this during a hangover. On your burrito or tacos of course. For what I have learned they don't make it there. It is bought. Don't quote me on that though. Where ever they get from, you have done a fine job. Kudos. Then again I like spicy. Feeling froggy go for the red. The green sauce is good as well. it has its uniqueness. Less spicy more enjoyable, as if to flavor.
Check them out it is an experience. A very good...
Read moreI've driven by this place a hundred times, but never knew it was there. Being the gringo white boy that I am, I would not normally go into this place, but it was rated so high I just had to check it out. The 3 guys behind the counter sell only burritos and tacos - nothing else. One is throwing tortillas on the grill, one manning the meat and toppings, and the other is at the register. The line was 10 deep when I arrived at lunchtime, but it took just a few minutes to reach the front. Nearly everyone in front of me was all about the Carne Asada Tacos were just $1 each. Once I ordered, I was out of there in two minutes! Carne Asada! Oh yeah, cash only.
A German gringo walks into a taqueria, says to the chef, "Trescientos carnitas taco" The cocinero behind the counter says, "Cómo que tres?" The gringo, after studying for his one and only spanish sentence the night before is totally confused and says (in German), "Nein, drei" (meaning No, three). The cocinero, now the confused one, proceeds to prepare 'nine, dry' carnitas tacos but decides to teach this white boy a lesson and adds some red sauce to each taco. After wrapping the amply-filled corn tortillas in aluminum foil, the cocinero asks "¿Algo más?" at which the gringo replies, "Yes, the whole family went to mass on Sunday". Gringo walks out with nine super-tasty carnitas tacos. ¡Ándele! ¡Ándele!...
Read moreEl Big Burrito offers a simple menu of tacos, burritos, tortas and mulitas (menudo on Sundays) with a selection of the usual meats: asada, pollo, carnitas, al pastor and for a little extra $, lengua. The taste is decent, not particularly amazing. The asada is not the best in my opinion either in terms of flavor or preparation...it's frequently on the dry side most times. However, the Lord has blessed their salsa - a good chile rojo that has a little bite and a touch of vinegar to the taste. The restaurant itself is bare-bones, there are a couple rows of melamine tables and chairs..not much else. Apparently lighting isn't held in much regard as the restaurant is always dim inside...and not in the romantic, candle lit dinner sort of way. Service is fine; the staff are generally pleasant and prices are average compared to similar restaurants. The restaurant now accepts debit as...
