I had lunch at this restaurant yesterday. I had last eaton there about 3-4 years ago. It was by far much better then. And that was the reason I invited my guests to this very same restaurant rather than Shahrzad, where we usually go.
Constructive criticism Kashke bademjoon (eggplant appetizer dish) - watery, no distinct taste, no eggplant pulp, no necessary oil, the kashke that was poured over it was runny - a big no-no, no distinct diced onions and I could not see and taste the usual and expected sauteed mint, an integral part of this dish. 1 from 5
Must mooseer (thick yogurt side dish( - over 60% of this yogurt side dish was regular yogurt and not the actual thicker yogurt (must keeseyee) with a few shallots. Had it not been for the shallots, once would not have known that this was supposed to be must mooseer. Too runny. 1 from 5
Salad Shirazi (tomato/cucumber/onion side salad) - Ok. Slightly tasted and looked old. Too warm when served. Not freshly diced tomotoes and cucumbers as one would expect in such a restaurant. 3 from 5
Rice on all dishes ordered - No distinct basmati taste. Not steamed enough. 2 from 5
Khorshte bademjan (eggplant dish/entree) - delicious - 5 from 5
Service - above average - attentive and courteous - 4 from 5 - though considering how few customers were dining at prime lunch time, one drink and one dish were missed.
Boneless chicken kabab - the chicken was Excellent - 5 from 5 - the rice was as rated above.
Overall food rating 2.5 from 5 Overall appearance of the restaurant 3.5 from 5 Women Restroom 5 from 5
I hope this review is brought to the attention of the owner and improvements made as it is a shame not to excel amongst its competitors, especially in such a...
Read moreDisclaimer: This is a short version of a very long review, simply because I've been to Javan more times than I can remember since they opened in 1986. Yes, ...GenX here, and I need to correct some of the misconceptions contained in a few other reviews.
It is NOT true in the least that they are "too expensive" nor are their prices on the high side. In fact, they are so generous with their portions that one can say their prices are very competitive and even a great value due to the volume of food you receive.
Today is a most auspicious day, due to the announcement of the truce, I need to tell you all that Javan's chicken and baghali poli were outstandingly healthy and delectable. The salad and all the accoutrements were also wonderful and packaged just right...(To be continued)...
But before I go, Javan sure did live up to Iranian standards of high touch hospitality and gracious customer relations, in that each and every person is a delight to talk with...my non-Iranian friends will be super happy the restaurant reopened with the same level of service as before.
Last but most importantly, Iranian family values are baked into the Javan brand, and especially so for me, because having a casual order in served to remind me of my good memories of dining there with my dearly departed dad, who never failed to make me smile with glee as he greeted the servers at any Iranian restaurant with the utmost respect and a little jokey banter about current events. ...Baba jan, I hope you know that today of all days, we witnessed a truce true to your spirit. A lot can happen in 60 days, but I will remain vigilant and cautiously optimistic.
Dear Elnaz & Javan staff, happy...
Read moreSome honestly great Persian cuisine in West LA. It’s really close to my work so I stop in often for lunch and every time it is consistently really good. It’s very large on the inside so they can host many different sized parties and it is never cramped. Each time we have been, the service has been really great and the whole staff is always really polite. They also are quick with the drink refills which I really appreciate. They don’t have a dedicated parking lot but street parking is very easy to find in this part of town.
They have a very large menu filled with all sorts of Persian classics. For my most recent visit, I ordered the Kashk O Bademjan as my starter, which I thought was really good. It’s nice to mix up appetizers instead of getting hummus every time. For my entrée I chose the Kobideh with a side of rice and salad. It’s basically like a Persian meatball in the shape of a kebab. Honestly really delicious in flavor and something I order often and would highly recommend. They also bring out free wraps and onions, which I love. They don’t skimp on the portion sizes either, and you will not leave hungry.
Overall some delicious person food in a casual setting in a quieter part of Los Angeles. I would definitely recommend to anyone searching for a solid Middle Eastern meal and I plan to be back many times...
