Until I came to La Morenita, I thought beans were just a garnish, like Mexican parsley, something they put on the plate to make it look nice but not something you ever actually eat. At La Morenita, I discovered that I had just never eaten good beans before. The frijoles puercos are so delicious that I ate two whole bowls of them. They are frijoles mágicos -- magic beans, savory and perfectly seasoned, with just the right amount of spice. They are so good I have dreams about them and wake up drooling. They are so good that within a week of my first helping, I drove an hour each way from the Westside just to have them again. They are so good that Jack would happily abandon his beanstalk just to get a batch -- and might keep eating them until Jack becomes the Giant.
Until I came to La Morenita, I thought corn tortillas were the poor man's flour tortilla, what you settled for if you couldn't eat gluten or simply ran out of better options. At La Morenita, I discovered that I had just never eaten hot, fresh, buttery corn tortillas, which are delicious on their own and the perfect complement to frijoles mágicos. I ate a whole basket of them, sorry not sorry, 10/10 would eat again.
Until I came to La Morenita, I had seen plenty of Mexican restaurants imitating the style of decorations in Mexico. I hadn't seen many, though, that went to the trouble of bringing in beautifully hand-carved and hand-painted tables and chairs from Mexico, adorning their cozy shaded little patio where smiling waitresses serve up steaming hot platters of freshly made Mexican perfection.
If this is the kind of food and experience you're looking for, then look no further. The new owner really loves what she does, and though I can't compare old to new since I never visited under the old regime, I understand that even more improvements are on the horizon. (Though I'm plenty happy already!)
Finally, if you're concerned about the recent negative review claiming that the food is not Oaxacan, you're absolutely right! It isn't. The owner is from Michoacán and never makes any claim to Oaxacan food. That reviewer seems to have confused La Morenita Oaxaqueña on 3rd Street with this restaurant, La Morenita on Broadway in East L.A. Don't make the same mistake or you won't find magic beans...

Read moreEverything was good until I found pieces of plastic in my food. Don't recommend this place for that reason only. Hope they hire competent workers to ensure safety of the food they serve. Elvis the server was nice and apologized for the inconvenience. But they couldn't come up with an answer as to what or how the plastic got into my food. I was half way through the plate when I found the plastic scattered in the sauce. It was my first and definitely last time here. I hope I didn't unkowingly eat any of those pieces. The server recommended me the chilli rellenos unfortunately after biting into hard plastic I must say...
