I get the hype! Came here after a nice dinner down the street needing something to satisfy our sweet teeths. Tucked away in the corner of a busy plaza, you would think that this unassuming place would just another ice cream spot. But alas Sonny's is the real deal.
Ice Cream - 5/5 For the price, probably one of the better ice cream's I've had. There are three overall types of desserts presented from least dairy to of course super-duper-creamy-there's-probably-a-cow-somewhere-here: Italian Ice, Cream ice and Ice cream. Now as your typical lactose intolerant Azn, anything close to ice cream sends me to the bathroom. But tonight - I wanted to live dangerously. As the personable owner Matthew said "Love at First Bite", and I got myself The Cowboy. Wish I remembered everything it had, but the cookie chunks and cinnamon essence sent me to Texas. My lady got the Lemon Italian Ice which is made from scratch at this humble establishment. Essentially a frozen lemonade but with such care in its potency and flavor.
Service - 5/5 Now the service truly takes the "ice cream" (like takes the cake?). On this lovely evening, Matthew and another staff held down the fort. And since we were the first customers of the night, Matthew took his time to explain the entirety of the menu. And of course interjected great dad jokes here and there. The love and care he had for his establishment and of course desserts, really shone through. We need more Matthew's in the world.
TL;DR Overall - 5/5 Location: tucked in the corner of a busy plaza Three overall types of ice cream from no dairy to "creme de la creme" I recommend the Cowboy Ice Cream if you want a party in your mouf; the Lemon Italian Ice was also delightful and not overpowering Service was gr10; we need more Matthew's in the world

Read moreWhoever the kid is that works at the time I am riding this review which is 8.41 p.m. On a Monday night, March 11th 2024... All I got to say is he is lazy and Wednesday rude but kind of polite in a cocky way... Typical youth of today unfortunately Lol... But very disappointed when he refused to make milkshakes or Sundays or any kind of item besides just scoops of ice cream because he said we are closing and everything is put away. Yet on Google it states you guys close at 9:00 p.m. And furthermore I called at about 8:15 p.m. this evening to make sure that they were open until 9:00 p.m., I live all the way in Tarzana and I drove all the way here to Sherman Oaks, specifically to get ice cream for me and my family... Sundays in particular, and the kid working refused to supply that. Because you said at the end of the day it is easier to just do scoops. If your hours are listed till 9:00 p.m. that should be the hours you are servicing people which is the information I was given by the young working guy. But when people show up at 8:30 or 8:35 or 8:37 p.m. they should not be turned away from 95% of your menu. I think it is extremely unprofessional and feel bad even leaving a bad review for the owners' sake, but nobody to call as I assume the kid would answer the phone again cuz he's the only one working and do not even email address for the owner directly. So just wanted to make that clear as I understand it's unfair when incapable employees calls the entire business to get a bad name, doesn't seem fair to me. But anyway that's all I got to say... Hire a kid with more manners, work ethic, motivation and most importantly somebody who takes pride in their...
Read moreThis is, without question, the greatest icecream I have ever had. The flavors are rich and come in a wide variety, the sweetness is perfectly balanced, the texture is rich and creamy without being too buttery. It is a little pricey, but the quality and care put into each scoop of icecream is unparalleled in this little family run shop, and they have refused to compromise on any aspect of quality. If you want apple pie icecream that tastes just like apple pie, they have that. If you want red velvet icecream that has delicious chunks of red velvet cake, they have that. If you can't have dairy, they have a varied selection of silky smooth and flavorful Italian ice.
The owner is incredibly passionate about their craft and product, and it genuinely breaks my heart that this little gem is struggling right now in the midst of rising costs that are a pain point for all of us right now. I can think of no other icecream parlor more deserving of success through the quality of their frozen desserts, and I strongly encourage anyone reading this review to check them out. It is a genuine crime that there is not constantly a line trailing across the block full of people hoping for a scoop or three.
I genuinely hope that this place stays in business for as long as possible so that one day I can take my own kids here one day and see how they light up after the first bite, and then have them ask me to take them again so I have an excuse to go more often....
