I cannot fathom how a reviewer can rank this as among "the best sushi restaurants in the world." I just received the worst handling of an order screw-up ever, and then after arguing for 10 minutes on the phone, tasted the worst sushi I have ever had. Everything went into the trash except the seaweed salad.
When giving my order over the phone, I explained that I did not want a chef's selection, and that I wanted 6 salmon, 4 tuna nigiri. Reika calculated the total for the desired nigiri, and I said okay and proceeded to order my other selections: Tuna tataki, salmon sashimi, and seaweed salad. I pick up the order, she reads it back, only saying nigiri. I was stupid enough not to investigate that they would be bagging the chef's selection instead of the nigiri I ordered, because, well, I expressly indicated that I did not want the chef's selection!
Flash forward to getting home to my sick wife who doesn't have much to look forward to these days, but she was excited for this dinner. Unfortunately, it was inedible. Thank god she prepared some asparagus and avocado as side dishes, as they ended up becoming our main course along with the seaweed salad. Reika refused to remedy the situation, stating that she thought that I was not happy with the total quoted for the desired sashimi and instead was ordering the chef's selection (that I explicitly stated I did not want). Clearly, we had some language issues at play, but they had a chance to remedy the situation and they failed. Reika's consolation to us was to offer edamame or ice cream on a return visit. Well, there will be no return visit, as the fish quality was terrible. And for those who LOVE raw fish, you know that there is an art to cutting sashimi. People go to expensive freaking schools to be sushi chefs. The sashimi we received looked so butchered that they should be embarrassed. I took a picture but it may not convey how bad it was.
Had they fixed our order, I likely would have forgone ripping them for how bad their food was, but when you throw bad service on top, it's unforgivable. I really hoped I had found the go-to sushi spot in the San Pedro area, but apparently living in a Port Town doesn't equate having good...
Read moreShin is the son of the owner. He is the worst, unless you are a Japanese Client. Today was the last straw. I have been eating at Tashiro since 1991. Shin tonight loss my families business. My mom and I ordered the spicy rice cake and a Japanese family of 6 arrived I guess they ordered the spicy rice cakes too. Shin served that family 2 orders and then came to me and said he was out of the spicy rice cake. He obviously gave our order to the Japanese family. When I asked him about it he said he needed to take care of his special Japanese Client. I am a regular at Tashiro I go every other week. This is the 4th time I have been treated rudely by Shin. And this will be the last time. I will go to...
Read moreI've been here a couple times now with friends. The décor is a bit "dated" but this doesn't detract from the quality of the food or service.
SERVICE: Quite polite and attentive, as you'd expect in a Japanese restaurant. Sit at the counter for the sushi bar experience or a regular table for the regular menu as well.
FOOD: This time I ordered a Tempura & Tonkatsu combination meal ($16.95). It's a good amount of food and everything was delicious. I was so full by time I finished my meal!
Meals here also come with a cup of Miso soup, which was very good.
OVERALL: Another nice dining experience with friends for some very tasty...
