It is awesome to have a new restaurant in Westchester--with its warm and cozy indoor dining space and rooftop deck for drinks, our family really enjoyed our first time at Tomat. It is very expensive and likely just for a special night out, at least for our family of five.
Note that our visit was during Tomat's second week of dinner service and it's clear that they are still working out the kinks, which is totally normal and expected. The menu was different than what was posted on their website, as they are a hyperlocal farm-to-table restaurant, so produce availability changes week-to-week and they are also determining which dishes are being well-received by diners and which ones are not.
Ultimately, some of the food was five stars: --The white sea bass ceviche was absolutely amazing--best I've ever had. Delightful flavors and presentation with crispy sunchoke chips. --The warm bread with tomato butter was everything you want from warm bread and butter! We ended up ordering three servings. The dehydrated tomato powder on the butter was a hit even with my teenagers. --The green salad included flowers and mint and was really enjoyable. Light and super fresh! --The trout & "chips" (which were Japanese sweet potato and red peppers lightly battered and fried) was delicious, full of interesting flavors, and devoured by all of us in no time. --The sticky toffee pudding with burnt milk gelato and butterscotch sauce was EVERYTHING. We all loved it and wished for more!
On the other hand, some of the food was just ok and/or didn't wow the table. Good but not great, including the garlicky greens and even the sides of the expensive pork chop dish. The pork itself was nice, but the sides didn't do it for us - plus the dish was $80, which seemed excessive.
The cocktails and mocktails were awesome! We tried a Manhattan, a margarita, a pomegranate spritz (mocktail), and a Moscow mule (mocktail). The presentation of each was excellent, the flavors were excellent - we highly recommend the cocktails and mocktails!
The service was attentive (we dropped a knife and, without asking, they quickly brought us another one wrapped in a fresh napkin) and friendly (our server answered all of our many questions and the owners Natalie and Harry both stopped by the table to deliver a dish and say hello/thank you for visiting).
We all noticed the quality of the silverware, dishware, and glassware. It felt sophisticated and lovely to enjoy the food and drinks in/on such lovely materials.
All in all, we will be back! The menu requires an adventurous spirit and a willingness to try new things--and with that, you will be rewarded with amazing flavors and a...
Read moreI recently discovered Tomat through the Michelin Guide, and have since experienced two delicious and memorable dinners there. The focus is on fresh, seasonal ingredients, which are brought to their full potential and respectfully presented. You can taste the culinary skill and passion Chef Posner and his team put into each dish. Its one of the few restaurants in LA that are truly taking a different path toward seasonal cooking and sustainability.
From the first bite of the housemade Barbiari Bread and roasted tomato butter, you know you're in for a unique experience. The bread, crunchy on the outside and pillow like fluffy and moist on the inside, could serve as a satisfying meal in itself. The menu changes frequently based on availability of product, but any of the vegetable starters are always a sure bet, along with the dry aged tuna, black cod, and dry aged Liberty Farms Duck. The desserts are a "must try" and I was impressed by the chef's interpretation of the classic Eton Mess.
The wine and cocktail program, curated by co-owner, Natalie Dial, is another compelling reason to visit Tomat. The list is focused on low intervention, small producers from around the world. There is also a nice list of classic cocktails as well as sake, which can be enjoyed in the dining room or at the open air rooftop bar. Aviation enthusiasts will be thrilled to discover the great views of arriving and departing aircraft from the bar!
Tomat is conveniently located just north of LAX, and easily reachable by cab or ride share. Its a great option for travelers coming to or from the airport, as well as those looking for a great meal during an...
Read moreTomat. Our second visit. Ok so yeah it is in a stripmall in Westchester with planes flying overhead. But don’t be fooled. Chef Harry Posner is a Brit who studied in Japan (with the Chef from Yess!) and Europe. He incorporates ethinc flavors from all parts of Asia, but there is no confusing that the cuisine exemplifies California. The produce has been sourced from the best vendors at the FM. The meats are all top of the line: Peads and Barnett pork. Monterey Bay fresh squid. They proudly list all their suppliers on their website, and they are in company with the best restaurants in LA. Chef treats each ingredient with love and respect. The flavors are creative as well as delicious. We do not go out of the way to get vegetarian, but wow they are a master of the vegetable. The lettuces had a yeast (vegan) dressing and we simply could not believe it because it was so good. The Liberty duck breast with Walnut Mole and dolmeh was delighfully original and the best duck breast I have had in many years. We ate every last kernel of the house-milled saffron rice cooked in a claypot.. The black cod with Suva curry had memorable complexity. Plus, there is always something British. Bangers and Mash, a homemade PotPie, more. They have a pastry chef; actually an entire floor devoted to a sophisticated pastry operation, I need to go in the AM to check it out on the way to LAX. They have a rooftop deck whitch will eventually be fabulous once they open it up. Typically, you have to go downtown to get this quality at this price. We are lucky as we live close. I look forward to going many times to enjoy all the seasons....
