I worked at Tulsi since March. Management was fine at that point in time. Things started to fall off behind the counter about a month ago when new "Director of Operations" Antonio came into Tulsi and started to change useless aspects of Tulsi. We had a solid team. We had an amazing working environment. I truly liked my bosses and even the owner and his family. They are urgently hiring right now since the original team has quit, including upper positions like the previous manager and a cook. You will be stuck with an admin team that knows very little about how things run at Tulsi and what goes with what. I know because I had to train the manager and most of the new staff. Whoever the manager trained was still not trained well. Admin lowered the wage from the original $16 per hour to $15 and at this point, possibly even lower. You will be expected to "never complain" because Antonio believes that you should slave away for Tulsi. He also thinks your job will be really easy compared to his. The current manager, Laura, got the job because of him so she has no backbone to support the team. She has no interest in working with you, but for you to work for her and Antonio. The same goes for his brother who is now also a manager. There is no leadership in this administrative environment. Only bosses. There is also an illegal rule of not talking about pay, one Laura agreed with having when Antonio brought it up. I never followed it and was completely honest with the new hires and expressed the unfairness of it. This review is coming from somebody that was overworked to the point of injury. I only had one request. To keep a chair at the front so I could rest my knees. That request was persistently fought and it was clear admin didn't care about their employees. I, the person who worked the best under pressure, was being mistreated through injury. I truly loved Tulsi. The cooks. My coworkers. They were a pleasure to work with. But working here is not worth this much physical pain and mental health decline. Expect chaos in the kitchen and confusion and Admin blaming you. I will not approve of the CEO because he should have been paying more attention to the blatant decline in the quality of the work environment at Tulsi DTLA. Two weeks after Antonio's arrival 3 people had already quit. That should've been an obvious red flag. A month after he was hired that number has risen to 5 people with more employees thinking...
Read moreThe staff was really nice and accommodating
The food was so so. Satisfactory but could be a bit better. The thing is, this restaurant serves food from many regions in India so it runs into the issue of not being able to specialize in any one particular style and you end up with everything on the menu being overshadowed by other places that do specialize. I do have to give them props for including Bombay street food though. I don't see that too often.
Also really nice that they offer different lassi flavors.
Couple things on the food, the dabeli should've been spicier and was missing pomegranate. The bhel was my favorite. Overall everything felt slightly underseasoned though. If they just upgraded the food quality a little bit across the board they'd be killer.
Portions were small. Especially for the Indo Chinese food. And I know they're priced a little less than a main, but not by enough to justify the tiny portions.
The ambiance was nice and they have good taste in songs.
Overall I guess I would recommend it to people not very familiar with Indian cuisine so they can sample different things they wouldn't otherwise have...
Read moreHad this place tagged after seeing all the reviews, and went in today around lunch time to pick up a few things. Overall, not super impressed. I think my expectations were super high.
I got these: vada pav uthappam 3 curry combo with garlic naan and lemon rice chai mango lassi & rose lassi
The chai was thick and strong, which I liked. Unsure how the lassis were - my friends had them and I forgot to ask. The dishes, we shared.
The uthappam was decent, but should ideally be softer. The sambhar and chutneys that come with it were pretty meh. One order comes with two uthappam though, which is good if you're hungry.
Vada pav was kinda hard and dry. Not what I'd expected. Though I'm also not a vada pav expert.
As part of the 3 curry combo, I'd gotten a vegetable chettinad, which did not taste like "chettinad" anything, which was disappointing. One of the other dishes was way too sweet (think it was the malai kofta). The daal that came with it was good though.
Overall, not particularly special. It's decent vegetarian Indian restaurant. But my quest for good South Indian food in...
