We’ve been back to the Wine Cellar multiple times for lunch since my initial review, so I thought I’d post an update.
In the past seven months or so, we’ve tried the French dip sandwich, the turkey-avocado sandwich, the ahi tower, and the crab cakes, in addition to the steak medallions and shrimp-avocado salad that we had back in January. All were cooked perfectly and tasted great. Service was equally efficient and friendly.
I couldn't resist having a glass of Guinness with my French dip and I'm glad I did. Their unique technology results in a canned beer that's almost indistinguishable from what you'd get on tap.
Any restaurant can have a good or bad day, but consistency is vital for success. I’m delighted to report that the Wine Cellar has been consistently good over an extended period of time.
The Wine Cellar is a Los Gatos institution. This family owned and operated restaurant first opened in the 1960’s and has been in the same hands for 30+ years. Many of the staff have worked here for years and service has always been top notch.
My wife and I have dined here often, mostly for lunch. The downstairs dining room is quiet and cozy with old world style decor and subdued lighting, but we prefer to sit on the large patio which we think is the best outdoor dining spot in town.
Our last experience was at lunch on New Years eve day. I ordered the bistro steak medallions which I think are tastier and more tender than other beef items on the menu. The three pieces of meat were cooked perfectly (medium rare) but I’ll have to ask them to cut back on the sautéed mushrooms and onions next time so that the sauce doesn’t overwhelm the food.
My wife enjoyed her double shrimp and avocado salad. She doesn’t really like tiny bay shrimp so our server just substituted a few more prawns without charging extra. The seared Ahi salad used to be her favorite, but the quality of the fish hasn’t been the same for a while.
We make it a point to order their delectable mixed berry puff pastry for desert. The pastry is always fresh and flaky and the vanilla ice cream and whipped cream complement the berry compote nicely.
If you’re in the mood for classic American fare with a California twist, I definitely recommend the...
Read moreI'm completely disgusted with how impersonal the owners have become. We are lonnnnnnnng time customers that have been dining here since the original Persian owner owned it when the bar had all of our family and friends names carved into it.
At any rate- half of us aren't living in the area anymore, but if there's a special occasion there's always an unanimous vote to meet here as we all love the fondue.
My review is on our experience for a birthday celebration, six people almost $600 bill.
My uncle was not happy with the (rubber) duck but did not want to make a fuss in front of everyone, so he just left it on his plate.
To be quite Frank! I think he was hoping that the server would take notice and say something, but he did not.
So eventually he called in to share with the manager. To his surprise (and my utter SHOCK) the person he spoke with questioned why he did not call in sooner, which is not only rude but a little combative. She took a message, but he never got a call back. He waited a week or so then attempted again to connect, but no one was available and he never got a response! The lady that answered the phone gave him an excuse ....that they are doing construction to open a wall up to add more tables.... so confusing with several (3 or 4) owners/ managers why no one returned his call.
Sooo here I am sharing their bad business.
On another note the, I think it was, monkey bread desert was absolutely disgusting! We ordered a few to go and what a waste of money!
My uncle said he and his family will never come here again and to be honest I'm not sure I...
Read moreYou pay $67.00 for a filet, at least they could cook it the way you want! Look, I worked restaurants when I was in college. My daughter currently works in a restaurant while going to college, so we usually are pretty empathetic to waiters, cooks, busboys, etc. but considering the amount of bucks you are forking out at tThe Wine Cellar, you would expect them to do it right. First of all, we were seated and then waited for about 20 minutes before we had to ask someone if our table had a waiter assigned to it. 10 minutes later, a guy comes over and says, " Well I guess I am your waiter now." Really!!!! ??? We order appetizers. After the appetizer, the table is kind of messy with wet napkins, dirty placemats, etc. But do the servers clear our table and remove the items and replace with fresh placemats, napkins, etc. No. They just move it to the side or around but leave it on the table. This goes on all night. I order a $67.00 filet medium and it comes to me barely medium rare. And we waited another 30 minutes for the food. Anyway, will not return. I know of several places where a $50.00 - 70.00 steak will be cooked the way you want it and service is better. Dry Creek Grill, Nick's Next Door are a few. So if you want good service, friendly folks, want a steak done right, avoid The...
