Derby Café & Bourbon Bar — Restaurant in Louisville

The Derby Café has a nice, spacious atmosphere with a view to the outside, but the incredibly poor customer service and mediocre food is a turn off.

On the day we visited, the kitchen ran out of food because of an unanticipated large number of customers. The meal we ended up with was disgusting. The management handled the situation very poorly.

The beef brisket I attempted to order was already gone. After a long wait, I was told they ran out of turkey for the turkey club. The manager (I'm assuming she was the manager, since she didn't identify herself) told us she was substituting the Louisville Hot Brown without asking if that was okay. At that point we should have left. After a 25+ minute wait we finally got our Hot Browns. The bacon on top was burnt with a jerky (chewy) texture. The temperature was hot on top, but cool in the center. The turkey at the bottom had a slight pink color. Overall a very disgusting, pre-made taste. After 30 minutes of waiting after ordering the server told us we came in when everybody came in but our order would be out in a few minutes. Ten minutes later I asked the host if there was a charge for water and he said no. I told him we waited over 30 minutes and got no food so we are leaving. He said ok. We didn't get an apology. Visiting Churchill Downs from NJ and had my first bourbon drink, prepared by Johnny Bourbon. Enjoyed my mint julep immensely but have to say, my husband's "perfect" old fashioned was to die for.
