Today was my first time eating at Southern Express Soul Food, and I learned something new... Comfort Food and Soul Food are not the same thing, but the difference isn't in the recipe. Let me explain. I walked in and was greeted with a smile and friendly conversation with the nice woman behind the counter. I've been to many restaurants with a nice staff that made me feel welcomed, but I had never felt more welcome than I did here. As I ate, I thought about why it was that I felt so welcomed. What I realized was the woman and gentleman behind the counter were genuinely nice folks that were passionate about the food and service they provided. I felt that they sincerely wanted to share their passion with others. The people running this restaurant served comfort food, but they put their soul into it. The woman helped me decide what to get from this cafeteria style restaurant and when she told me how cheap it was, I knew I was in trouble. As of April 2024, every item is $1.75. I gorged myself with fresh and delicious food. I had a chicken thigh, 2 pieces of fish, jambalaya, mac & cheese, and macaroni salad... I wanted to add other things but my plate was overflowing. All of this food, including a can of Coke was $12.25 plus tax. You can tell when something is made from scratch and everything was. Plus it was so delicious... The love that went into the preparation and serving of the food truly made it soul food. I had passed this place many times over the years when I visited Louisville and kept meaning to stop. I now regret not stopping sooner.

Visiting Louisville and wanted to support local Black Businesses. I am very disappointed in the food. I should have read the other reviews. The Fried and baked chicken 🍗 was delicious and hot. The cabbage and Mac and cheese lacked flavor. None of the food looked freshed

We were in town for business and googled soul food but unfortunately it was a big let down. The collard greens were not seasoned at all! The corn bread was very thick and the pork chop was deceiving because the batter made it look good, until you bite into it and it was as thin as a piece of paper and AGAIN…. NO SEASONING AT ALL. My sister had chicken and it was dry but she said the baked beans were ok. The summer salad and the can of sprite was the only thing acceptable. In the restroom, The toilet seat has seen it’s last days. It was a toss up between them and the Caribbean place next door…. We loaded by choosing...

The best place I have had yet! I love the food it’s just like home cooked meals, it’s always served hot and delicious! Everything from meats to sides are a dollar and for around 10$ you can have a pretty big portioned meal. There fish is to die for! Have never been when it wasn’t amazing. There jack fish is possibly my favorite but it’s hard to choose it’s all so good. I am obsessed with the greens they are made so perfect it reminds me of my aunts food from my childhood. I hope this place never closes because it is my go to for fish and greens! The corn bread is so...
