I've had omakase in LA, San Francisco, Boston, and NYC. I was so excited my home finally got a place, so I didn't have to travel for this experience! That said, I had a few issues that made it not worth $110 per person.
The bartender was wonderful, but she admitted she was not familiar with this sort of cuisine. As such, she hardly knew what she was serving me. At one point, she said, "and whatever this is," which was a little jarring, lol. You get omakase for the expertise of the chef, the unique flavor combinations, the specific order the dishes come out in, as they compound and compliment each other. But this felt like nigiri was kinda just thrown at me with no rhyme or reason, since the bartender didn't really know what was going on.
The cocktails are very college-bar-esque, in that they feature a lot of grenadine, triple sec, and sour mix. The drink was tasty, but it was just a Sex on the Beach served in a martini glass.
The nori wrappers were chewy, which made the handroll spill all over the place. It was hard to eat. The menus were stained, warped, had typos.
Some of the good: the sashimi was delicious. Clearly they're getting high quality fish. I especially loved the salmon.
The bartender was INCREDIBLY nice. She's still learning, and I can appreciate that. It just really hurts the omakase vibe. They should absolutely keep her, but I think it would do them well to teach her a bit more about what this experience is meant to be, as well as what many of the ingredients are. At one point, I heard customers correcting her several times that "miso cod" is not a soup. I really don't think it's her fault, she just needs more expertise.
Overall, it's a new place still figuring things out. For most people in Louisville used to Americanized sushi, the experience is probably worth it to them. It'll feel unique. But if you're comparing this to omakase on the coasts, it really doesn't come anywhere close at this price. If it were $50 cheaper, I think I would've been more forgiving in...
Read moreFive stars simply isn't enough to express how good this restaurant is. From the well-appointed atmosphere to the incredible food and impeccable service, this hidden gem exceeded any and all expectations. My husband, daughter and I tried a little bit of everything. Our 4 year old had miso soup, edamame, and salmon sashimi - she cleaned all three plates! My husband and I did the Omakase offering. This comprised of 3 single-serve appetizers, 10 nigiri, and one hand roll. We also ordered two rolls to split (triple Toro and Emperor). When I tell you I simply perished after the Toro with caviar and the uni nigiri. The fish was tender, fresh, and beautifully plated. I genuinely cannot believe a restaurant like this exists in Louisville. We loved the cocktails, too! The yuzulicious (lemon and refreshing, slightly sweet) was fantastic, as was the saketini (gin and sake, less sweet). The appetizers we received included a miso cod that my husband wanted as a full entree and fresh oysters with yuzu foam that we wished we could order by the dozen. Parking is a challenge but give yourself a few extra minutes and you'll be fine. While we did bring our daughter, I wouldn't categorize this as a kid-friendly restaurant and likely wouldn't bring kids who are restless or rowdy as the environment is more on the upscale side and there aren't kids menus or activities. We decided we need to work Yi into our standing budget because I can't fathom a life where I don't come here once a month - and we live an hour away! If Michelin ever comes to Louisville, Yi...
Read moreMy partner and I are in town for just a couple days to visit family. We stumbled upon Yi Sushi Omakase as we took a stroll down through the boutiques and such in the neighborhood called The Highlands. In Yi, as soon as we entered the restaurant, we were greeted warmly by a young woman named Maki. We didn’t have a reservation, but she was able to find us a table anyways. The restaurant itself is modern classy. I loved the dark green and wood throughout. The lighting is dim and the music quiet enough for a conversation to go on. I loved the overall ambiance. At the table, we were immediately given ice cold water (much needed on a 90* day) and warm hand towels to clean our hands. We started off with very yummy miso soup. The menu has an excellent selection of items to choose from for dinner. We chose to get sushi rolls that we shared. The sushi rolls did not disappoint. We chose a spicy tuna, tuna, and Philly roll for simple rolls. For their signature rolls, we got the Dragon Fire roll and Ocean Fish rolls. Those were absolutely incredible. So so delicious. Anytime we visit a new town, we love to check out a sushi place for one of our dinners. Here in Louisville, Yo Sushi Omakase was exactly what we hoped it would be. Next time we’re in town, this will be one of our stops. I don’t want to forget that the young lady that sat us was also our server. Her name is Maki and she was professional and really just the sweetest. She even gave us suggestions for local places to visit. Definitely, if you love sushi, have...
