Bought a dozen donuts, and two special chocolate cream filled bars. Tried two of six types I bought so far. But the first thing that really grabs my full attention about the whole of it is...The chocolate sprinkle!! Let me count the many ways I disliked it. First...this is my first trip to Shipley, as this one store just recently opened here in Lubbock, Texas. And I will most definitely not be back there, EVER!! The Chocolate sprinkle...wow...so wrong!!! Firstly, I believe that a donut such as the chocolate sprinkle should have the glaze on it, same as a plain glazed donut, and as Krispy kreme does, for example on they're chocolate sprinkled ones. What...are you trying to cut calories by not having glaze on them, so thus saving I'm guessing 20 calories on a 500 calorie item?? Might as well serve it raw to me as to be like that...Really? If I am going to eat 500 calories already anyway, do you think I am worried about the taste killing extra 20 calories for a wonderful glazing??? Please!!! Or are you just going cheaply with this horrible idea? What ever it is is a game changer for me, especially after seeing the strawberry iced and another similar iced in my box was to my displeasure all the more, also without glazing too...wow...what a let down!! That sure killed my desire to ever think of Shipley being a good donut place, as even the worst place in town is better than this. And more on the chocolate sprinkled...it was so bad in the chocolate flavor too. It was totally way too chocolate, and the only comparison I could think of is to imagine a Hershey Dark Chocolate, with a dead fish smell, and made even way more dark chocolate, and without any sugar or sweet to it. Even the sprinkles seemed to taste faked and very cheap. And then the dough. It was like an old expired can of the cheapest biscuit dough without any flavor at all, but stale and very heavy compared to say, a wonderfully light and fresh yummy chocolate sprinkled and glazed perfectly, and then iced with delightful light chocolate buttercream, with fresh sprinkles, like as is how a krispy Kreme is... so delightfully much better in every possible way!!! Sorry but I won't be attending a Shipley ever again, and feel cheated by having to toss them all in the garbage, as what they are!! And, if I am going to go with something sweet to eat, than I am going for full flavor and richest quality, regardless of how many calories, and not in need of really bad ways of saving 1% of calories and making something sweet on same level as a can of sardines, and horrible as something sweet. Sorry but you have failed completely in all that should be good and not shortcut...
Read moreGrowing up Shipley’s was a treat that my dad and I shared every weekend. Our location had a glass window to the kitchen so you could watch the donuts being made. The kolaches were absolutely my favorite and no matter how many times I tried to find an equal I never found one that measured up in my opinion. The biggest difference was the bread. It was delicious and pillowy with a great flavor. The next best thing was the cheese inside the kolache. Most other donut shops don’t include the cheese. It was such an exceptional childhood memory I would drive 20-30 minutes in DFW sometimes just to have that experience. I was so excited when Shipley’s came to Lubbock! I was going to share my childhood love with my own children. The location on 82nd and University has consistently let us down. I see that the owners will comment and say they hope those critiquing their store will give it another shot and another change to make it right. We have done that in spades. Consistently the orders are fulfilled incorrectly and we are missing something no matter how many times you repeat it or try to stay on top of the person at the drive thru window. But the biggest disappointment of all are the kolaches. The bread is consistently terrible off of multiple attempts spread out over days, weeks and months. It is hard as a rock a lot of the time. The cheese is often overcooked like this experience shown below. I have even tried the various offerings of kolache from the Bold to the Earl Campbell, etc. All the same. This location without drama or exaggeration has ruined my childhood memories. My only hope is that this is isolated to this location and that the others located in Lubbock haven’t ruined the...
Read moreI have been a customer of Shirley's all my life. As a child my Daddy would take us to the store on Main in Houston where we could see them make donuts. Since coming to Lubbock we have gone to the store on University and never had a problem. February 14th I went to the store to pickup the order I made online. The lady who was at the window informed me that the baker had quit that morning and had to get the product done at the 19th street location. And we made substitutions for what they didn't have. When I got home I was shocked over the kolaches. They were hard, misshapen, hardly no cheese. I ordered 3 bold sausage and cheese which I didn't get. Two regular sausage and cheese. They were all regular sausage and almost cheese. Nor did I get the 2 jalapeno. I truly believe these were old by at least two or more. I called in the mid morning to explain the situation and and for a refund. Although it was 11 am, there was no answer so I left a message asking for a refund for the kolaches. I haven't had a call back or have...
