Wow. My boyfriend and I had regularly been buying Greenbush’s old fashioned donuts at the grocery store when they had them, but I had never been in their storefront until today, when we decided to have a donut picnic for his birthday.
We got an assortment of 12 donuts, and although we haven’t finished all of them quite yet, I had to come on here to say,
If you’re looking for a place to get donuts, GO HERE!!
We came around early afternoon and they had already been pretty cleared out, but even the donuts that were left were all SO GOOD.
We got some classics like chocolate sprinkle, regular glazers, and a bunch of old fashioneds, all of which have been so yummy. The glazers were perfectly fluffy and not overly sweet or sticky. The chocolate sprinkle donut had a nice crisp outer layer and was also soft and fluffy on the inside, per my boyfriend. The frosting was perfectly creamy without being overly saccharine, even with the sprinkles!
I’m here, however, to talk about the blueberry cake donut with maple glaze. OH MY! We unfortunately only got one, bc I’m not big on cake donuts and my boyfriend’s not big on blueberry. This was, to put it lightly, a mistake. Both my boyfriend and I, despite our previous biases toward this donut, agree it is the best donut we’ve ever had. My boyfriend’s first remark upon taking one bite was, “This is like a whole breakfast!” And I agree; it’s like blueberry pancakes with maple syrup, in donut form. The donut itself was perfectly spongy and soft, with a light blueberry flavor that wasn’t overly artificial like many blueberry donuts tend to be. The glaze was sweet and bursting with flavor, and was an unexpected but welcome addition to the blueberry flavor. Definitely coming back in the future, if not just for this one specific donut.
We’ve already had the chocolate old fashioneds on occasion, which have always proven to be wonderful,(as we keep going back to buy em!) and I’m also excited to try the cherry old fashioned, which looks super yummy!
So in summary, everything was absolutely wonderful and definitely made our birthday picnic that much more special....

Greenbush might be the last old school bakery in Madison. Gone are the days of Donut Delite. Even Krispy Kreme didnt stick around here. But Greenbush is a true old school kosher bakery. They are open insane hours, they have no tables to sit at, I dont think they even serve coffee. The bakery cases are the steel and glass fortresses not designed to be pretty. But the donuts.
The donuts are huge, fresh, and exactly what you'd hope. They're best known for their apple fritters, which are the size and density of a fresh baked apple pie. I personally love Boston Cream donuts, and theirs are so filled with fresh custard that one bite leaves you covered in goo. Honestly I know I've tried other donuts but I keep coming back for those so regularly that I have no memory of the others. I'm sure they're great.
They do sell out very quickly, so be careful getting your hopes up.
If you want to sit somewhere with coffee and wifi and eat your donuts, they share a building with one of the better Rocky Rococo's Pizza locations. I used to sit in there on a work break with my laptop, a donut, and a pizza slice.
Getting back to my original comment, they're definitely pricier than most bakeries. Cookies start at $1, most donuts are closer to $2, and the apple fritters are over $5. But you get what you pay for. Actually, you get a...
Read moreDate of visit: Nov 14, 2023 Whenever we travel, we always look for great donut shops and bakeries where we can find unique donuts for our sweet rogue trips. We came across Greenish by doing a simple google search and we are glad we went. from the outside, this unassuming bake shop looks like a simple coffee and donut shop, but simple is NOT what it is. They offer a lot of flavour options for their donuts - it can be hard to choose. While we were there - the lady in front of us was so overwhelmed by the options it took her a long time top place her order for her dozen - asking multiple questions about almost every single flavour. This could easily have been a very annoying and frustrating situation for the woman working - but she handled it like a super trouper. She was nothing but friendly, and helpful to this woman - and Never once lost her cool.
We ordered a half doZen as well - but the lady before is gave us ample time to make our choices. Their donuts are very fresh - even at 8 or 9 pm which is when we were there. each flavour we had was amazing - so full of flavour and well crafted. their fritters are massive. People were buying them just to take photos. They are as big as your head.
What a lovely find, with some amazing treats. Worth finding this place when you...
