Read moreI'll begin this review with the attributes of Zuzu. The best thing about Zuzu is the outdoor space, it's really well done and super unique/spacious. The food is nearly restaurant quality (most items) and then there's the happy hour. The fact that this cafe serves alcohol, in my opinion, shouldn't discourage families, it is extremely unlikely for someone to be drunk here (actually I've never seen it). The happy hour consists mostly of beers and they have, admittedly limited selection, of Microbrews for $2.50, plus they have wine and other alcohols. In addition to alcohol, the happy hour includes an excellent gyro sandwich for $4.50. The cafe has a nice interior and it seems clean (I can't really figure out the few reviews stating otherwise), its pretty charming actually, and the workers are mostly women, and often cute/friendly (I'm 21). Here are Zuzu's faults, the coffee doesn't have free refills but bigger issue being the Zoo. In addition, to moral objections with Zoos, Henry Vilas Zoo really impacts Zuzu's business (shocker), on a nice summer day finding parking can be really tough and suddenly rather than the customers being largely from the Vilas neighborhood, it's mostly families with kids. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's what made me doc the fifth star from this Cafe. But overall it's a great local place, I really considered...
Read morePre paid to reserve one of the outdoor domes. Arrived and was told I was expected the previous day. Another staff member confirmed it was for the day we arrived. Dome was supposed to be heated, so we had to wait. At this point, we had already ordered and paid for our meal. Finally, I requested a refund for the dome rental due to the wait. I was bluntly told, "No refunds."
When we finally could enter our dome. The cold metal chairs had no cushions. The interior of the restaurant and domed area was quite dirty as well. It looked like it hadn't had a deep clean in a long time. The exterior was overrun with dead potted summer plants and fall leaves. Looked very shabby and unkempt.
The food was mediocre at best, and hot sandwiches were cold.
I'm so disappointed because it has the potential to be something quite unique. A little pride in ownership would go a long way to achieve this.
Yes we we were offered a dome that had seating, with cushions. However, this was lounge seating. Not dining seating. Also, the glass coffee table in that area was disgustingly dirty, and the staff were clearly not going to clean it first. So we opted for another dome.
Yes it is the Fall/Winter season, but most people do fall cleanup. I. E. rake leaves, pull dead plants, put planters away...
