My Belgian husband and I discovered Nicholas Eatery by accident during my vacation stay in Malibu over the Thanksgiving break as we were searching for a nice breakfast spot. After reading the reviews, we decided to give it a try. We typically share meals but when we first tried Nicholas’ French toast..Wow!! We were blown away.
The perfect balance of flavor and quality of ingredients along with the presentation was on target. We then ordered another breakfast entree. Again, the eggs were soft scrambled, seasoned with herbs to perfection. The coffee was freshly made and the OJ was squeezed fresh like in France.
Of course, we came back for lunch on the same day and enjoyed the French Onion Soup - the best I have ever had and I have had plenty in Europe and other fine restaurants. Not salty or dark or overly cheesy…again, the balance of flavors and ingredients reflected a lot of passion in Nicholas’ cooking. Next, we had the lobster roll which was very nicely presently with freshly seasoned lobster and quality sauce atop a nicely toasted brioche. I couldn’t stop taking pictures and sending them to my friends and family. My husband enjoyed the deviled eggs which at every bite was heaven and the herb roasted chicken which also was juicy and tasty.
Next day, had to try the avocado toast after seeing Nicholas’ preparation on Instagram. Needless to say, I have brought my daughter back the following month for French Toast and was just back for Christmas this week while on route to join our friends in Santa Barbara for some wine tours. An important stop there on the way was Nicholas Eatery and we reserved dinner on the way back as well. Another delicious experience for dinner with their seafood pasta - “Michelin star quality”. The mussels ceviche, escargot, and seafood pasta was top notch as you can see from the attached pictures - so fresh.
We have eaten at Maestro’s Ocean club in Malibu and Bouchon in Santa Barbara ONCE, don’t bother going there to waste your money or time. You will be sorely disappointed after experiencing Nicholas Eatery.
Thank you Nicholas for the wonderful food, exceptional staff service, cleanliness, and passion in cooking. We will be back and I hope this review serves others well as they will not be disappointed.
Much love, The...
Read moreNicolas Eatery is a refreshingly great restaurant that treats its customers and the food they order with delicate care and respect. We were blown away the first time we visited. We never go back to the same restaurant two days in a row but we returned the next day for take out.
Everyone wants to know about the food so let’s start by saying if you can make mashed potatoes taste this good, with this much nuance, you are a freaking magician. We had the lobster roll, avocado malibu (with grilled shrimp and tomatoes), buttermilk chicken sandwich and the salmon tacos. Everything was art. On the second day we ordered the Korean fried chicken, bib salad, truffle fries, mashed potatoes and the lobster mac and cheese. Again, so good and everyone was impressed.
Restaurants are really challenging to manage and it shows that Nicolas and his family go to great pains to make it right for their customers in every possible way. Ever since the pandemic I’ve grown incredible respect for restaurant owners and operators but that’s not to say that every restaurant gets it right. Nicolas Eatery does and for their dedication to the craft, for their operational hardwork, for their family’s unifying kind attitude to every single customer it deserves every good review and more. Some dips**t at Infatuation said something like “the food won’t knock your socks off” and this feels so offensive to me. It should anger the locals who love this place. We went to Malibu Farm for dinner last night, where I would not go back even if someone paid me to eat there.
Initially I thought the family was Italian but based on the nuances from the food it feels like there is a strong French influence. I hope the Malibu community can continue to support this beautiful place. If you’re visiting, don’t be an idiot and leave a puny tip or make the kids run back and forth with your tap water demands. Order alcohol or at least drink bottled sparkling water (for everyone who asks for free soda fountain water remember there is a special place in hell for you). Tip well. Tell Nicolas and fam that they’re doing a good job. Enjoy the food for years to come. Pray that it stays...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I have been here twice now, and we will certainly be back for more! We stumbled upon Nicola's while traveling up the PCH on the hunt for some good brunch. We were very concerned we wouldn't be able to find anywhere with available tables, but sure enough, not only was there parking available, but there were beautiful patio tables available shaded by large umbrellas.
It was truly delightful. I ordered the Smoked Salmon Tartine (which was simply to die for) and my boyfriend ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich. To this day he says it was the best he's had in his life.
We returned again just recently for Mother's day, this time we had a reservation and I'd been waiting weeks for this day! Unfortunately, my poor time management caused us to be 10-15 minutes late and I was worried we would miss out on our table. To my surprise, the kind man that greeted us said it wouldn't be a problem, and took us to our favorite patio table. I was relieved to say in the least! I ordered the Heirloom Spinach salad with Roquefort cheese and lardons, as well as the Asparagus Leek Soup. The salad was absolutely delicious, but the soup was the star of the show. I've been eating and cooking leek soup all my life and this was other worldly. My boyfriend ordered the Smoked Salmon Benedict (a Mother's Day special), and that too was simply breathtaking. The bold flavor of the smoked salmon paired with the silky hollandaise and pillowy poached eggs was absolutely perfect. We could not have asked for a better Mother's Day brunch, and it absolutely made my day.
We will be returning to Malibu for Nicola's Eatery just as soon as humanly possible! My only regret was that I didn't...
