Sushi Roku, interesting! First, all the people we outstanding, OK, full on fabulous - A+! Polite, helpful and cool. We were a tad early so the hostesses sent us over to BOA next door (same ownership) to get a drink while we waited - By the way, BOA is delicious! Unfortunately, no one there bothered to wait on us for over 20 minutes, but at the bitter end a nice cocktail waitress took our orders for a few margarita's that were very good and even brought them to us ... that was cool, just in the nick of time! OK, the Sushi Roku folks came and got us and showed us to a nice table .. a curved couch-ish table, a fun spot to eat. Our server, Destiny, could not have been more delightful, super friendly and very helpful with the menu. We trusted her on the fluke and kumquat sashimi - it was the best part of the meal. The other servers that partnered with her always gave good descriptions of the food and even recommended the best way to eat them if we asked, nice touch. Sunomono was fresh simple and great, only lightly spiced, salmon sashimi was "good", we wished they offered several grades of higher salmon to choose from, but was "good". They only give a teeny amount of wasabi and ginger - you might want to ask for more in advance if you enjoy them. Cauliflower was excellent, multi-color, simply seasoned and very, very good. Soft shell crab was 'good', not amazing but good. We both noticed it could have been wrapped a little tighter, all the slices of the rolls fell apart and we're pretty darn good with chop-sticks. We have eaten many of these all over - they were a little bit rookie-rolled - but good. Lamb chop, quite excellent - tender and very tasty, perfectly cooed and seasoned. Tuna Jalapeño roll was "ok" at best. Quality was good, fish excellent, just a very boring roll, "tuna on tuna" - nothing fun or wow. Finally - the "Heat of the dragon" margarita specialty drink was just ok - odd tasting, I would have preferred a traditional marg. In Summary, a mixed bag - but don't read this the wrong way, it was a very good meal, with an outstanding server and every team member A++. Food ranged from VERY, VERY Excellent to soem items just "good". Nice looking crowd - great for pretty much any occasion, date night, friends, all good, bar was cool - all in a newly constructed location - lots of people having fun. The feng shui of the design of the "room" was odd to both of us, sushi meets hip suburban hotel vibe? Kind of scratching my head about the design(er) - super clean and nice, but didn't feel it. Next door, same owner, but a better vibe, feel, and mostly design. Yes, we would absolutely go back again. I might say yes to the things we loved and maybe go in a different direction to the things we didn't love. Various friends noted mixed reviews, some good, some ok, but we we really enjoyed it. Maybe just wrap that soft shell crab with a little extra love and skill and have a crisp white wine vs a heat marg or maybe a traditional one or saki. 10-stars to the people, especially our server, Destiny, and we just loved how great everyone was. Definitely a good place, fun, good energy...
Read moreWent there last night with a friend for happy hour / dinner for the first time. I used to go to the Sushi Roku at the Del Amo mall before they closed a few years ago. I had no idea that in addition to the sushi menu they have a really upscale substantial entree offerings and excellent drink menu, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Beautiful atmosphere. We forgot to make reservations and walked in at about 5:40 to catch the tail end of happy hour. The hostess Tais was super sweet and sat us at a booth opposite the bar even though we didn't have reservations. She also made a few recommendations that were spot on. Our server Paloma was attentive, knowledgeable, and also made great suggestions. The manager stopped by the table a couple of times to check in on us and also answer questions about some items on the menu that we had forgotten to ask our server about. She too was very attentive and knowledgeable. When one of our Sushi dishes was delivered without the sauce, which we didn't know was missing, she went and got the sauce and poured it for us. The restaurant is very comfortable. It was on the quieter side when we got there but even as it got busier during the dinner hour we could still talk fairly easily. Had the most amazing chocolate multi-layer dessert that was served in a goblet. Unfortunately the dessert menu is verbal and I didn't take a photo. One of the best meals I've had in a long time dining out. Not inexpensive but definitely worth the cost. Great special occasion place. I plan on having my birthday dinner there this year. Recommend making a reservation especially if you want a booth or it's a special occasion as they can run a bit of a wait especially on...
Read moreSushi Roku is a hopping restaurant, even on a weeknight. It's next to Boa, a steakhouse, and both have valet parking.
Sushi Roku has amazing food and desserts; the sashimi is thickly cut and they included a small restaurant banner with the carrot cake! When you order hot sake or miso soup, they do arrive very hot, as the servers state. That just gives them a longer time to cool down, and that means more time to enjoy them.
The staff are kind and quality workers. The two restaurants, Sushi Roku and Boa, share the same restrooms, and when you go through the door that leads to the restrooms, you can see bussers and servers briskly walking to and fro, contributing to the flow of both eateries.
Sushi Roku is a vibrant restaurant I am glad...
