This place has nice folks working there, but relies solely on its location and proximity to Manhattan Beach, and its professional sports partnerships with NFL, MLS, among others.
Nothing special about the place beyond that. Crappy hotel bar and restaurant —odd closed and moving hours, pool and workout room were downgraded when the changed to Westdrift…and maybe the silliest and most petty thing is that anything you order has an automated 20% gratuity on it that is rarely disclosed.
When you get your check to sign off on something—if they don’t provide the breakdown (and only give you the room or credit card check)…it doesn’t show item by price, tax, OR the automatically added 20% gratuity and other added charges—most people are inclined to use this charge as the base, and tip another 20% plus.
Once you look, its pretty crazy and the $17 glass of wine you bought jumps to $24…then you tip and its $30.
Cool if that is the intent, but other than intent to overpay that much—-it is simply fraud (when breakdown is intentionally undisclosed).
So E of this would be palatable IF it was disclosed properly that you were being charged an extra $30 each night above and beyond your full room charges.
This was supposed to change with recent CA legislation, but this property skirts the full “up front” pricing required by law when you pay.
After already feeling “nickel and dimed” ar every turn…retrieving a full and detailed breakdown of all charges after she checkout proves challenging.
They waffle about how to collect, or use your “credit” (the undisclosed charges that CA law has recently prohibited) and after asking for a receipt and breakdown after checking out and returning home—the property has still failed to provide these documents…and its been nearly two months.
The math didn’t match and they have yet, over 4-6 phone calls, to resolve it. It shoyld have been easy.
We aren’t talking a crazy amount of money…just a lack of attention to detail and a pattern of failure to do anything but take extras at every available opportunity—whether the current laws allow for it or not.
Doubt the state complaint to consumer affairs will result in anything—-but if you stay there you need to be aware of the undisclosed extra charges—-auto gratuity to all of 20%…and the staff that doesn’t share this.
From a room perspective—small and boutique like, with a ton of rooms overlooking parking lots and Rosecrans Ave.
Seriously nothing special. Stay by LAXfor half the cost of a room—-and way least scammy feel...
Read moreI recently stayed with family and friends at Westdrift for the 4th of July weekend. The property is in a beautiful, safe, family friendly area close to the airport and Manhattan beach. Due to the Covid concerns make sure before you check in the hotel, you let the front desk know to schedule cleaning daily, robe, extra soap, keurig (I just needed hot water for tea), and extra towels otherwise they won't have it ready in the room. Check in was smooth. The staff member who did my late night checkin was a bit rude, I had asked daily schedule cleaning, he said he will put it in but didn't and seem a bit confused and showed a bit of an attitude when I had asked him to add any service as listed on the West Drift website made it seem like I was burdening him with my requests.I had requested daily cleaning from the person at the front desk during our late night checkin and he didn't put it in. I had asked for extra towels, we were given 2 towels for shower for 4 people. 1 disposable coffee cup for 4 people. Then next day cleaning, 2 of our robes were taken away for no reason for 4 people. 4 friends staying in one room and that requires daily cleaning. I found that out when I talked to the front desk staff in the morning. This was frustrating especially had I not asked the front desk in the morning again, my room wouldn't have been cleaned again. He was in a rush like take the keys and leave type. Usually note pads and pens are left in rooms, he said we don't offer that when it clearly states that on the website. I don't know if that man was having a bad day, but he was rude. I was charged 400 USD on my card and he didn't feel to explain why just handed me my card and said nothing, that was very rude. Maybe he was having a bad day. The morning staff was amazing, explained everything and had everything fixed esp. 4 towels. The resturant isn't open to sit down dining, but you can order room service. The bar is open and you can sit in the lobby which is very safe and beautifully decorated. The parking is a bit pricey at about 40 dollars a day, it very safe and easily accessible, multi entry/exit just make sure you keep your room key in handy or you won't get in or out. If you are in the area check out Randy's donuts (very fresh and unique donuts). Also, everything seems to close by 8 p.m. near the area so you might have to travel a bit farther for late night dinner options. There is a water refill station. I may consider a stay at this location again...
Read moreThe hotel has a really nice outdoor area with ping pong table and corn holes and sofa for hanging out, but other than that, the pool, and the golf course, the room itself and customer service was quite disappointing.
We booked a staycation for Father's Day so my husband could golf and the girls can swim. I requested early check-in for 11am, and was told over the phone and chat that it would be more like 2pm, which is fine, as I understand it's only a request. When I checked in at 12:30pm for pool access, I was told that the previous guests had already checked out and they would contact housekeeping for cleaning. I checked on the status at 2pm, and an associate, Richard, told me it should be ready soon. So we waited in the lobby, waiting for the room to be ready so the girls could nap. At 2:30pm, another associate told me that housekeeping is just now cleaning the room and it would take an hour. So we got in the car and drove around so the girls napped in the car while my husband golfed. The room was not even ready at 4pm, standard check in time.
I was extremely frustrated with this delay as they could've just told me "no, sorry, we won't be able to check you in early today" and I could've made other plans instead of waiting around for 2 hours with "your room should be ready soon". When I voiced my concern over the app chat, the associate said they "try not to tell guests 'no'", but I think "no" is better than lying to the guests and wasting their time.
We booked an executive suite so the girl could have a separate sleeping space, and to our disappointment, the "suite" was just a big studio with no room separation. We also booked the suite according to the nice balcony picture on the website, where we can sit and watch my husband golf. Again, disappointed to find that our balcony is nothing like the photo. The photo shows a concrete wall at couch height then bars so you can see the golf course; our balcony had like a 5 foot wall and the girls can't see over the wall unless I'm carrying them.
We really wanted this to be a good staycation spot for us, but were really turned off by the experience. What's worse, we don't think the staff cares at all and was very reluctant to help, not even a "sorry for the inconvenience", "how can we help", etc. They just stood around chatting and I had to keep going up to them to ask for updates.
We expected so much more from an...
