This was our first chance to try out the "new" Train Station Pancake House in Marion since it reopened in the last year or so. We were pleasantly surprised at our first visit here as a pancake house.
So we didn't get any pancakes...
We were very surprised by the full menu, there were a lot of choices, from breakfast fare to sandwiches, to more typical dinners, including steaks (although they close at 3 pm these days, quite before my dinner time). For a Sunday lunch we tried sandwiches; We ordered the Depot Club and a cheeseburger. This first experience: Not quite 5 stars, but a solid 4 star meal. The club sandwich was full and made well, and we liked the fries - they were lightly battered and crispy, However, the bacon was not crispy on the hamburger which would have made an improvement.
The décor is essentially the same as the previous restaurants that have come and gone in this location, but I always liked the atmosphere and somehow it seems more authentic now that "train station" is in the restaurant title. They do have a little model train there, but in an added touch of realism, it was fun to feel the rumble and hear the whistle of a real train as it rolled past during our meal. Otherwise, I always liked the carved table surfaces from a previous Mexican restaurant incarnation. Somehow the eclectic combo still works, although it doesn't remind me of a pancake house.
Our service was really great: 5 stars for that. The staff was happy, friendly, and most importantly, both easy-going and helpful. Our food came out in maybe 10-12 minutes despite the place being about somewhat full, so we thought it would take a lot longer. These people definitely seem to know how to run a restaurant, and we had a good first visit, so we plan to go back and try some other things...
Read morefirst time stop at the train station pancake House in Marion Indiana. not sure if this is an old train station but it looks like one and it's right by the railroad tracks. breaded tenderloin was thin with a thin breading but it wasn't bad. would have been great if they had trimmed off the fat and the gristle and if they had breaded it evenly some parts were bald. not sure what kind of lettuce they put on there but we couldn't eat it. so that came off. I give it three stars. $8. the grilled tenderloin was nasty. I don't think the grill had been clean it tasted like everything that had been left on the grill for the last week. french fries were cold and soggy they needed 5 to 10 more minutes in the fryer. onion rings were pretty good even coating nice thickness on the onion itself I'd say they were the best part of the meal. we asked for extra tomatoes and got 1, no extra. we asked for everything to be wrapped in foil. half was. half in styrofoam. need compostable packaging. had asthmatic reaction to all the smokers...
Read moreHusband & I decided we would have brunch at a hometown restaurant we have never been to. We enjoy seeking hometown restaurants when we go out-of-town, instead of the chain restaurants! We were sat at a dirty table, the hostess put our silverware & menus on it, then 3 mins later a waitress comes by to wipe off the food laying on it, to only wipe half the table. Then another couple of their ethnicity was seated in booth behind us, they were then given waters, then the waitress came back to them and took their order, gave the bill to the family seated across the aisle, & coffee to another couple seated behind them. All while we sat there and no one attended us, as we sat for 13 minutes while the one waitress went by & looked at us 8 different times, the other waitress that sested us, went by twice with nithing asked or served to us. This was the worst that we have ever been treated at a restaurant! I will make sure I let all know our experience at this restaurant! Better luck to those who choose...
