On the way here I read about the brewery tour and thought what the heck, something different to do and for $10 ea it would be worth it. However their website is wrong because it's $20 a person now. So we decided to skip that and spend it on beer.
As far as first impressions,.... Mine was that it's small and kind of dirty looking. The menus had stuff all over them which is gross in my opinion.
I love the walls and ceilings with all the glasses though the fish tanks were cool. The service was good and quick and they were helpful. The place was packed but we got a seat right a way just by luck. We wish more beers would have been available then what they had but we found some good choices. They had 12 available to choose from.
Reading reviews I was thinking that they didn't have flights but they do. Five 5 oz samples for $17.50. Pretty common pricing. The beers were better than expected and better than I have had at some other places recently. They were accurately described in the menu and I really enjoyed them. For the drive and ambiance though I probably wouldn't return but I would buy the beers at home.

For one we agreed on beer I was shocked. We both loved the JAA Black Raspberry Stout and the Toonilla Coffee Stout. The Please the 5th Imperial Stout I also liked but for me it was a bit sweet. The Raspberry Ale smells great but to light of a beer for my liking. The Rain in the Blood my husband liked but I didn't. 4 or if 5 isn't bad though!! Read moreHear ye, hear ye! Gather around, citizens, for a joyous proclamation of my visit to Dark Horse Brewing Co., located at 511 S Kalamazoo Ave, Marshall, MI 49068! I journeyed from the northern reaches to visit my daughter and her beau, and upon their recommendation, we ventured forth to this fine establishment.
Arriving at the hour of 12:30 PM, we found them bustling yet welcoming, with space for us to sit. I partook of the brisket sandwich upon a pretzel bun—a noble choice indeed! The horseradish sauce was kept to the side, by my request, and I added their house barbecue sauce for dipping, which proved to be a delectable decision. The horseradish sauce, though flavorful, struck me as overpowering, but the barbecue sauce brought harmony to the meal.
My companions, the young ones, indulged in a Detroit-style pizza crowned with pepperoni and cheese, a dish they greatly enjoyed, leaving just four slices for a future feast. It seems they hold this pizza in high regard, having savored it before. We began our repast with spinach and artichoke dip, served with tortilla chips that, alas, could have benefitted from a bit of toasting, being somewhat stale. Yet the dip itself was rich and delicious, though beware—the bowl arrives at a temperature fit to rival the sun! The server’s warning was well-founded, as I found it truly scorching.
I must advise you, good townsfolk, that the local water is of an acquired taste. I recommend choosing from their fountain drinks or their renowned adult beverages instead. The cost was fair, the service commendable, and the atmosphere rustic—though this made the cleanliness a touch ambiguous.
I would gladly return to Dark Horse Brewing Co., for their fare is worthy of praise. Huzzah to the brisket sandwich, the pizza, and the delightful dip—but mind the chips and the fiery...
Read moreI have driven past Dark Horse many times and vowed to visit someday. That day was Monday and what a disappointment. With my two dinner companions, we entered the beer garden and found a table near the back. There was no information about how to order food or beer and the bartender was busy with a long line of people.
After a discussion with an inside bartender, we found out that there is no table service and that food and drink is ordered at the outside bar, so we got in the long line without a menu or beer list. As we got nearer, we saw some menus sitting on the bar and cut in to grab one. Finally, we got to order only to find out that our first three food selections were not available. We settled on Nachos and BLT's and I got a pour of Pilsner. The beer was warm and had an objectionable sweet taste. The food arrived and was cold.
There was lots of poison ivy growing around our table and the general condition of the place was dingy and dirty. Bird droppings adorned the table which looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. This place needs a serious power washing and some coats of paint.
The one bright spot was an inside bartender who was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately I didn't get her name, but she was 20something with her hair in a little bun on top. She is the only reason for...
