Oh. My. Yum.
So I was craving salteñas and searched all the food delivery services, and thank goodness that Grubhub was able to deliver. This particular restaurant serves Bolivian food, and when I write that the salteña was worth the delivery fee, service fee, and tip...IT IS WORTH ALL OF THE FEES.
The dough itself has a delicious touch of sweetness, and the filling is perfectly seasoned. Olive (with the pit, so chew carefully), chicken, hard-boiled egg, peas, potato, onion, and a sauce will literally gush out on the first bite. Think of it like a little purse, and bite from the top. Or do what I do and break it from the top, just to dip it into the little pocket of goodness. Whatever way it's eaten...you'll love it. There's a white sauce that comes with it and looks mild, but is actually spicy.
Next were the empanadas, and all I can say is chicken. Get the chicken. For some reason the beef tasted old. Both had little raisins inside. It might not be your thing (it's definitely not mine), but the meat/seasoning/filling combo worked with the raisins. I couldn't taste any in the salteña but you can definitely taste it here. Delish.
Now we're on to the Api con Pastel, which was the best ending! It's a warm purple/red drink that kinda reminds me of this fermented grape drink my Mom would make. Same creaminess, same aftertaste, but different. It pairs well with the pastel, which is this doughy cheesy cakey pastry that had a tiny container of confectioners sugar with it. I just dipped it in the sugar and took a bite. So satisfying :D
Oh, and Iet's not forget the mocochinchi. It's fruity and cinnamony and refreshing and sweet and just the right touch to wash down a savory meal. I think it tastes peachy, but maybe it's something else. Not sure, but it's yummy! Next time I'm actually going to the restaurant, and ordering the silpancho. Happy...
Read moreI wish I had pictures but believe me when I say that whenever we come here, taking pictures is the last thing on our minds. We always arrive knowing what we're going to get and sometimes we're so hungry that we call ahead and have them make our food before we even arrive. While we haven't been too adventurous with our choices, we just know what we love and always feel as though it was a home cooked meal. Without fail we always get the chicken tucumanes (don't get caught not putting the white sauce on them bc it simply takes these already delicious empanadas to a whole new level). I like to go during lunch time because they have lunch specials that are a good value and consist of a soup and entree. Of the soup options, I love the chicken soup and also the quinoa soup (has beef and chicken). Can't speak on the peanut soup that my friend always gets because for some reason my mind a pallet won't let me want to try it. Moving on...the silpancho is always a staple. One of us always has to order it if the other wants something else (usually that's me). I get lentils when it's available and I also love their carne asada. The flavor is mouthwatering. I got their pescado frito once and for a second I though I was in El Salvador having fish by the beach. I had to keep swatting my bf away from my plate. Ordered 3 more to take to his parents since good fried fish is hard to find. Check them out if you're in the area. It's not fancy by any means. Just good quality food! As an added bonus, I always take tucumanes to get together or potlucks. Also to my new mommy friends. They're...
Read moreThis location has a much better space than their former location, but the food and service is not as good. When the food was brought out, the server did not bring out enough silver ware. I had to wait while my food got cold. The food was also over cooked and crispy, except for the flank steak. As others have pointed out, the potatoes taste old. They taste like they were cooked a few days ago, frozen or left in the fridge before being served.
Some of the tables are right under the HVAC vents and will be super cold, so watch where you sit.
My bill included a 20% service charge even though I has less than 4 people. When I have come in the past with Latino people, even at 4 or more, we were never charged a service fee. Perhaps a service fee was added because I was there as a black single mom with children? Then, after they ran my card, they brought me another bill that asked me to choose a tip of either 18% or 20%, in top of the service fee.
The service fee is not mentioned in the menu or verbally either. It was just for me. Then the owner lady came over to ask how my day was and talked nice to me, as if she knew she was scamming me and didn’t want me to notice. It worked as I did not notice the service charge on top of the tip, so I walked out paying about 40% outside of the meal.
I called my Latino friend the next day who took me there the last time to ask if he received a service charge, and he said No. So, if you are black or go there as a female with children, watch you bill because they are discriminatory and predatory. I...
