THIS PLACE SERVES YUMMYLICIOUS KABOBS! I visit this place regularly and I have tried almost everything here. I definitely recommend Maiwand for kabobs.
DECOR: Simple and clean. The restaurant can accommodate 30 people. There is beautiful Afghan murals on the wall painted by a local Maryland painter.
FOOD: Excellent would be less to describe how delicious the food is. I couldn't make out from the listed menu but I saw the picture and ordered a Lamb and chicken kabob. It is served with naan (Bread), flavored rice, salad and cilantro-yogurt sauce. The chicken and lamb was so well-marinated and cooked perfectly. This is the best kabob I have had in the USA till date.
So fair, I have had the following here: Appetizers: Aushak, Mantwo, fried bowlani, kaddo and samosas. I like the aushak and mantwo (though they both taste almost similar). The bowlani and samosas are very greasy.
Entree: Chicken Kabob, chicken tikka kabob, beef kofta, chicken seekh kabob, chicken malai kofta, lamb and beef kabob combo and grilled salmon. I personally like the chicken kabob, lamb kabob and the beef kofta better than the rest. My stomach was upset after eating grilled salmon here. I am not allergic to salmon. May be the catch wasn't great!
Sides: Chickpeas curry, spinach, peas and potato. I don't recommend vegetarian dishes here.
SERVICE: The restaurant style is like Chipotle where you stand in a queue and place the order, make the payment and then look out for a place to sit. Once your oder is ready, they will call out your token number. You can either go to the counter and get your food or a waiter will find out and bring your order to your table. The latter usually happens when the restaurant is less crowded. The food is ready within 10-15 minutes from the time ordered.
PRICE: Very reasonable! One dish was quite filling for two of us so we ended up spending $15 (without tips).
I want to go here again and try all their different dishes. I highly recommend this place to everyone who like eating Afghan Kabob's. Also, my favorite Maiwand brand is...
Read moreNot a great experience at Maiwand Grill. My family and I ordered takeout which happened to be identical to a previously made, online takeout order that was sitting on the counter waiting for pickup. We were told that the completed order was for another customer and were assured that a new batch of food would be made for us. We waited in the seating area for at least 30 minutes for food to come out only for me to watch from a distance as the old order (which was never picked up) was packed in a bag with naan and given to my mother. I should have spoken up at the time, but the audacity of the business practice, especially after waiting for so long, was too extreme for me to process in the moment.
When we got home to eat the food, of course it was cold. No sauce came with the lamb ordered and the naan was sloppily made as they had large rips and pieces of black charcoal still attached to them (most of which needed to be picked off using my finger nails). The food itself was pretty good despite me having to microwave it.
I really wanted to like this local restaurant, but sadly I won't be returning unless they get better organized behind the counter and become more considerate of their customers. There are plenty of other restaurants to...
Read moreThis is for the new West Baltimore Street location in Baltimore.
Delicious food at great prices, especially for Baltimore. Would go back and would recommend.
Got take out. They ran out of their daily special when we went (around 7pm). The vegetable platter was a delicious sampler of chickpeas, sweet potatoes, spinach/cook greens, eggplant, and potato and peas curry. It didn't include a salad, but came with seasoned long grain rice, a big round piece of fresh bread, and a yogurt sauce. I could eat a whole bucket of those sweet potatoes. (Would have liked a salad.) The potatoes are the same as the peas and potatoes curry under the appetizers. (Entree was $9.99, good portion size)
The green peas and potato curry was $3.99 (smaller portion, but still good. would not have ordered if known it was also in the platter)
Rice pudding was delicious. It has a little ginger in it which reminds me of soap, but would order it again regardless.
Kofta kabob was also delicious. Onion pieces included were raw instead of grilled and too intense. May have just been a garnish instead?
Wish they didn't use Styrofoam for their take out, but that's besides the point.
Can't wait to try the...
