First time here, left with good impression. Came at 1:30p Monday, so not busy. Lunch menu features a great value : sashimi special for $9.95 ($5 more during dinner hours). Cali roll was as expected although I liked how this was prepared as i like "faux shredded crab" versus "fake crab sticks". But i was happy about the sashimi portion size being slightly above average and I appreciated getting salmon, white tuna, and red snapper (not much a fan of tuna).
Being hungry, I also ordered the seafood udon noodle soup. Had lots of fresh ingredients, tasty but light broth, and presented in a large "cast iron kettle" ... quite shareable for 2.
Place can only sit about 20 patrons at the tables and 4 or 5 at the bar.
Among the several sushi restaurants in downtown Bethesda, my Top 3 are now: Raku (good food + good dining experience and environment), Maki Maki (great lunch option), and Satsuma (hard to beat their $1 per sushi...

Food is decent for the price, especially their lunch specials (nearly half price). There are fancier options even in Bethesda if that is what you want, yet I come here about once a week.
A true gem if your expectations match their hole-in-the-wall vibe, with American-style (sweet) but good-tasting sushi, soft jazz music playing in the background. This is fully comparable with other similar options in Rockville (noticeably better imho in some ways - faster service, fewer menu choices).
Most customers seem to order either delivery or pickup, so seating never seems an issue (since the pandemic, even at lunchtime, while the nearby NIH still hasn't demanded full return to the workplace). Servers vary depending on who is there but food is always consistently high quality, at least over the last year.
I will definitely return, again and again...
Read moreWow , not sure where to start. This was my first time and only time at Maki Maki. I won’t be back. I ordered take out based on the reviews and proximity to my house. Nonetheless, everything I ordered for me and my family was horrible. The worst was the shrimp fried rice. It only had four shrimp on top of it and no shrimp mixed in. Also, the rice had no flavor and seemed old. The sushi was ordered was really bad too. I had the salmon skin rolls. It was over cooked, greasy and too fishy. The other items we ordered were tasteless and over cooked. This was the worst Japanese food I’ve ever eaten. No one in my family was happy with their selection. Also, don’t order the spring rolls. They were very greasy and flavorless. Stay away from this place if you know good Japanese food, because you’ll be very...
