The Blue House — Local services in Bethesda

Such a cute store with unique gifts for home and baby. But such AWFUL service. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt since I walked in 10 minutes before closing on a Saturday. But in seeing the other reviews online for the store, it seems I'm not alone at receiving such poor customer service. Even though it was not 6pm, the sign outside was switched to 'closed' but as I approached and people walked out, I figured I'd swing in real quick to pick up a gift. Moments after arrival, I started getting pestered to be helped since they were closing soon. I recognize I didn't have a specific item in mind, so I was browsing. I knew I only had a few minutes to make a decision, but I knew I could find something if I was just given a moment to look and not be asked a bunch of questions. After (I assume) figuring I couldn't be helped, the sales person told me if there's nothing they could help me with, they were closed (insinuating--"get out"). I 100% would have made a purchase if I had been given the space and few minutes to make a decision. But since I was essentially being kicked out, they lost the sale. After I walked out, I looked at my phone and it was still only 5:58! TECHNICALLY not even closing time---it was just so rude. I will never go back and can't believe such poor service to not give the customer at least until they were actually closed to make a decision AND isn't it common courtesy to give a slight buffer? I wasn't going to keep them there all night. I guess they just don't care, which adds to how poor the service is here. Total...

The Blue House has been a Bethesda staple for cool gift items for 30 years! The store moved from its original location further down Woodmont Ave. several years ago.

Once you walk into The Blue House, you will be enchanted by all of the local and region-themed gifts available ranging from decorative pillows to unique cookbooks, candles and other decorative items.

There is something for everyone in this quaint gift shop. Their children’s section is well-stocked with various toys, books and trinkets.

The staff were very welcoming and friendly.

Staff insisted on keeping my one item I intended on buying up front while I continued to quickly browse the store (even though my hands were not full and I had no problem holding the item)- soon after, the patrons and I heard a large crash of something breaking. It was not until I waited 5+ minutes in line to pay for my item that I was told that unfortunately it was broken. That was the last of that item in the store as well, which is beyond frustrating. All I was told was "sorry" and was offered no consolation whatsoever. I will not be returning here based on flippant...
