Sarah's Handmade Ice Cream River Road — Restaurant in Maryland

I had an absolutely wonderful experience with a custom ice cream cake. Overall great customer service, staff personality, and fast response on a tight timeline (needed it made same-day!). I have a dear friend, J, who had a big milestone to celebrate, but the milestone was a bit more…unusual. J had just quit a job they’d had for 15 years, and it was the only job they’ve ever had at the time, but above all…it was a job which they HATED, and with all the emotions wrapped up in doing something big like this, we wanted to surprise J with a celebratory cake and custom message for the occasion. The online order form was super easy, and after I submitted it, because I was kind of anxious that it wouldn’t get done in time on such short notice, I called the shop to check whether they could fulfill it, especially since my requested message contained an expletive lol. It was not even 15 minutes since I purchased it on the website, and the person who picked up the phone immediately said they 1) got the order and could fulfill it same-day in time for the surprise 2) they had no issue with writing the F word 3) they thought the cake idea was hilarious and were excited to make it. MADE HIS DAY.

I saw a post on Facebook about the February flavors and decided to stop in! It was just an okay experience.

I tried the Bethesda Brownie Brickle and I'll be honest, I felt like it didn't have much taste to it. The sweetness levels were good, it wasn't overly sweet at all and I liked that, but it just didn't have a big flavor. If I had to guess the flavor, I'd have said "sweet milk" or "Vanilla with brownie". It certainly wasn't bad, just not what I expected. I think I'm going to have to go try a few more flavors before I can really pass a solid judgement here (oh no! Not more ice cream!).

They're doing construction on the outside of the building, but that's understandable! You can still easily get to the place and get in. There's two outside benches in front of the place you can sit on and eat. The shop front was small but clean, if a little cluttered. The long cases displayed the ice cream and it was awesome to see all of the flavors. The cashier who also grabbed my ice cream was polite and courteous. Overall, I think I'd like to try more flavors! I'm relatively new to the DMV area. One of the things you naturally ask when you meet people is where to go out to eat. My all-time favorite dessert is ice cream, but I'm SUPER picky about it. When I've told people this, most people's first response has been Sarah's, even if they live on the other side of the metro. Naturally, I was skeptical. I'm picky about what I like and am somewhat resistant to straying too far from brands I already know I like. In other words, if I'm going to spend carbs and hard-earned money on it, it better be worth it. Was Sarah's worth it? 110%. Like die-hard Apple product fans, I will go out of my way and spend more to have this ice cream in my freezer. What makes this ice cream good? The texture and intense flavors. I like that I can pull this ice cream from the freezer and it's super cold but not solid as a rock; it's creamy and ready to eat right away. Great work. Please support...
