Art of Cakes Bakery — Restaurant in Maryville

Whew. Disappointed on many fronts. We ordered a cake sampler for a potential wedding cake and chose 6 different flavors, but pretty much all of them tasted indistinguishable and sickeningly sweet.

The sampler came as cupcakes, which wasn’t initially disclosed to us. When we got the sampler, the cupcakes were impossible to distinguish between. We had to call in to figure out that the flavors were written on the bottom of the cupcake wrappers. When we called in, the woman we spoke to was unfriendly and acted as if we should know this, but we were never told and once again, didn’t know we would be receiving a cake sampler in the form of cupcakes.

The cake was dry and crumbly, and it tasted like they may have used a boxed mix, added a slight amount of flavoring, then over-baked the cake. It definitely didn’t taste homemade. Not only that, but the cake portion was smaller than the amount of frosting and it hardly filled the wrapper; not fluffy or well-crafted at all.

The frosting was like flavorless glue. There was way too much of it, and it was so sweet and sugary that it hurt our teeth after 2 bites. No exaggeration: we felt slightly nauseous after eating a few bites, and it was a struggle for us to get through all the flavors to see if any were better than the others. They weren’t.

To be honest, I think anyone could make a better cupcake from a boxed mix, or any old homemade recipe. I would never recommend this bakery based on the cake. It was truly some of the worst, most disappointing cake I’ve ever eaten.

Not to mention, I’ve been nervous about sharing my review based on seeing past reviews that the owner/owners commented on. An absolutely nasty attitude towards anyone with anything remotely negative to say. If they made better baked goods and had a sense of professionalism it would serve them better in the future.

As a side note: the person I interacted with over email was friendly and communicative. Whoever the women in the bakery were, they were not...

Ever since we moved to Tennessee, the Art of Cakes Bakery has been our go-to place for all our custom cake/cupcake needs. I have ordered lots and lots of cakes here and we are never disappointed. I usually communicate with Erin via email and she always finds time to accommodate all of my requests and answer all of my questions. I've browsed through some of the reviews on here and let me tell you - don't be swayed by people who can't take "no, we don't offer that" for an answer. They specialize in that specific type of frosting with those specific 30+ flavors, and they have perfected them over the years. If you don't like a specific type of frosting and prefer something heavier and sweeter, it's not a good reason to leave a less than desirable review for a business, it's just that tastes differ - not a reason for a bad review. These ladies pour their hearts out and always try to do their absolute best, but you can't please everyone I guess...

I haven't ordered a cake from Art of Cakes in many years, as I moved from Blount County. After trying to find a strawberry cake like my daughter wanted for her bday, I placed an order online, hoping a week would be enough time. Since I never received a confirmation and the charge never went through my bank, I decided to call on Wednesday to make sure my order was received. I found out it had not been received (as well as a couple of other orders I places that day due to an issue with several banks being offline that the day). I started to panic until Erin said she would be glad to make the cake for me. It was fairly simple, and she assured me it would be ready when I needed it. I drove an hour to pick up my cake. It was ready and it was exactly what I asked for! It was beautiful!! We cut the cake that night for my daughter's birthday, and it was the most perfect and delicious cake I have ever had. The buttercream was definitely the best I have had. There was a perfect balance of cake and icing, and the design was perfect.
