We decided to give this place another try being that they have recently moved, our friend recently visited said it was great. We reordered the garlic noodles, hapa udon, the hot & sour thing, fern salad and the pork steamed buns.
They only take reservation so we booked a spot for lunch. We are glad they moved here this location with the view and nice breeze that we fell in love with under a different establishment. The server Koa was great!
We were skeptical but happy to report that everything were to our satisfactions. The fern were fresh and tasty. Pork were sweet, savory, meaty and the bun was soft.
The test was the garlic noodles because the flavor is all in the garlic oil seasoning and the noodles since there's nothing else. It was flavored to perfection. We can't stop eating it.The seasoning completely different than what we experienced few years ago.
The other 2 noodles especially the hot & sour was my new fav. It's not hot but just a slight heat that lingers. The soup was light and fresh.
Definitely will go back.
Past Jul 2019 review - We (3 of us) came here 2 different days trying to get a table. It's an extreme case of waiting regardless to that's not what caused this poor review. People that read my other reviews knows I adopt and trying to understand the evolution of food might not carry over across continent but basic ideas based on names they used should be at least similar. Like they called it clam chowder, it better not be potato with cream only. It at Kraft should have clam, bacon flavor and cooked through roux.
So let me start by stating the good:
Staffs are friendly even though it's constant attention to every customers in a small place.
We ordered a few appetizers that looks promising and the prawns (big), steamed pork bun and the wings are great.
Now the reason for my poor review is this place is name Star "Noodles" which implies great noodle dishes per what I on the reviews right? Guess we didn't ordered the right dish, namely the garlic noodles, Hapa ramem and the Lahaina Fried Soup which on the menu it was referred to a the chow fun. Here are the issues:
Garlic noodles. Though it has garlic but all i can taste is oils and salt. It's just noodles but nothing else in my opinion.
The Lahaina Fried Soup is the most shocking to 2 of us that are Chinese. Isn't a chow fun even if it's fat noodles. It's more of a Korean rice cake noodles. These are just squares instead of round. Back to my clam chowder analogy, if they want to call it chow fun it better be similar and it's not. Fine not chow fun so we tried to see if it has any redeeming value based on tastes and flavors. Sadly it's also the most salty of all the dishes. All 3 of us have the same reaction so I am not making this up.
The most disappointing dish is the Hapa Ramen. Description says "rich" pork broth is a joke. Tasted like salted water. I had better rich pork flavors from a pack a instant ramen. No joke.
We don't think what we had were any noodle worthy dishes. We definitely had better and cheaper. Even after we tried to review based on flavors it still come up short.
Again may be we didn't ordered the right dishes but it's called Star Noodles so they better be good noodles. Sadly they aren't any from our dishes. Form your...
Read moreLiterally ALL HYPE. Don't waste your time or money. With all the hype around it I was skeptical but I had a few people tell me they enjoyed it. I will say it's unusually difficult to get a reservation here and I'll explain more in a bit. Best part of this area is that you can have a patio view as it is all outdoor so you can watch boats pass by, just hope that it's not a blistering degree to have hot ramen or anything else.ni didn't get to try any of the cocktails because the person on the phone told me that they were completely booked. However, I was allowed to schedule a pickup which was 2 hours from when I had called. Very peculiar schedule to me. I tried the next day when they opened and the person who answered after three call attempts, told me that they were booked. I put in the to-go order for some ramen and pork buns, which was only available one hour after they opened, again,Very peculiar. When I arrived there were many tables available and only about three or four tables full. I mentioned it to the hostess and she said that sometimes they had to 'hold tables for reservations since they book out so far in advance.' However, almost immediately two women walked up and asked if they could accommodate a table for two, the hostess said absolutely we will get you in. The pretentiousness and the hype around this place is so overrated and I truly wish that I had listened to the signs of why I should not have been a patron here. The hostesses have an attitude on the phone and in person and there is literally no Aloha here. What's worse is the Ramen is dull, flavorless, and flat. The noodles don't taste like anything, the broth tastes like water. Overall the hapa Ramen that I got tasted like everything had been made separately. Ramen is traditionally full of rich flavor from the broth to the noodles to all of the fixings, this place isn't even pushing out instant ramen. Ramen. They are just pushing out boring bland dishes. The pork buns were the best part, they do know how to make pork overall. I have had better pork buns but I will say that they did a good job here. I don't have high expectations that getting this fresh and in person would have been any better. I have had a lot of Ramen in my life and a lot of to go Ramen in my life and if the food is good then it's good cold and reheats well. This one however, fell flat and was incredibly disappointing. $70 later and it was not worth the hype, save your money and time and go elsewhere! We will...
Read moreTLDR: Amazing place! Must visit if you are in Maui! Good portions, great quality, fast service and nice, friendly waiters!
I am sooo excited to write this review. I wanted to write this when I was eating the food. All the dishes were amazing(except for one small thing).
We ordered Pohole Salad and Egg plant for starters. Pohole was one of the best starter I have ever had. It had a nice crunchy texture from the fern, onion was soft, mushy and sweet, the kombu had a nice salty flavor and finally Ebi and Ika (very small quantities) provided the umami. More of it would have spoiled the dish! Was really good. Once I try all their starters, I will definitely order this again. The egg plant was also really good. It perfectly cooked. The meat was juicy and the skin was also soft. Most places miss the timing, causing the skin to be overcooked(would be tough to eat). The sauce had a mild sweet flavor. My mom wished it was a bit spicy. Not me. I liked it.
We ordered pad thai and Singapore noodles (vegan version). My mom is a vegetarian and my wife decided to accompany her. They both loved it! They both finished that big plate. When I tried it, I could stop myself from finding egg in the noodles. Noodles taste better with egg. My dad and I ordered Ahi belly and Hapa noodles. Ahi belly was juicy, soft and well cooked. We both loved it. The curry was also good. The Roasted pork in Hapa noodles was too tough for me. I prefer the pork to be soft. If you like soft pork then this might not be for you. Other than that, the dish was great. The broth was thick and creamy! Egg was perfect and so were the other add ons(bamboo shoots, bokchoy and crab/fish cake)
I also had their Sangria and like you guessed, I liked it. Nice fruity flavor with a good punch of rum. Two of these would have given me a buzz. I stopped with one since I was driving.
And the presentation of these dishes were great. Even though I was hungry, I couldn't stop myself from...
