Gigi's Restaurant — Restaurant in Maynard

Gigi's was surprisingly good. For Maynard and the surrounding area, it rates five stars, and I took off one star only because I have eaten Vietnamese food in Dorchester MA, which has a large Vietnamese population and multiple Vietnamese restaurants. But who wants to drive 45 minutes just for dinner? My partner and I both had vermicelli noodle bowls (also known as as Bun). I got the Fried Summer Rolls Vermicelli, and my partner got Grilled Shrimp, Pork and Summer Rolls. They are fresh, with a large serving of the protein part (summer rolls, pork, shrimp) along with rice noodles, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, Asian radish, and topped with mint and chopped peanuts. A chili garlic sauce is served on the side. Very tasty, though the sauce was milder and seasoned differently from what I prefer. A spoonful of siracha sauce helped. The restaurant is clean. Service was very prompt. Chop sticks come standard, but they will provide typical American knife, fork, spoon upon request. The food was delicious, however this was some of the worst service I’ve had at a restaurant.

Walked in and there was a “please wait to be seated” sign which we followed, but took a while for someone to show up. But we got seated and it was ok, took about 10 minutes even though there were a decent number of empty tables.

But then, it took 40 minutes after that for someone to come by to ask us what we wanted to eat (and only because I asked the person re-filling our waters to help us order). Our waiter seemed to have totally forgotten about us, as the other tables around us were going through multiple rounds of their meal. Incredibly frustrating.

Then, when he did finally take our order, he was pretty rude about it? No apologies, and basically just plopped our dishes on the table without saying anything. And the food was a bit cold, making me think he was slow to bring it out. He also got the order wrong on a nearby table.

The rest of the staff was nice and helpful, but this one waiter was honestly awful. I will still go back, and just hope he is gone for the future, since the food made it...

The only improvement is to stop having the bar and the restaurant function as separate entities. Inevitably you have to wait for a table, so you sit at the bar, order drinks, then when your table is ready you have to settle up at the bar before being seated. On a busy Friday or Saturday nite, this can take 10 minutes. The rest of my party kept telling the waitress to circle back, because they were waiting for me to settle up at the bar! Crazy. Just have the tab xferred to the table!

We have been coming frequently since GiGi took over from Iron Skillet, and before that the Quarterdeck. Its a fun, quiet, relaxed spot for a date nite. Bar area is small, not really a pick up joint, just to use while you are waiting for a table. Portions are not huge, but neither are the prices. I usually get the Salmon, for $16.
