Duchess Bar & Grill — Restaurant in McAllen

The small bartender Rob went out of his way to condescend, insult, belittle, and embarrass me in front of the entire bar with employees and customers watching, all because I walked in late and asked if the kitchen was open around 1:30 am. Rob diverted the yes or no question and sarcastically said, " Well, it's late and the kitchen is cleaned up so yahhhh......., you always come in late, do you not like us or something"? Rob grinned like he had told off an annoying customer with pride and turned his back, walked away before I could even respond or process the most embarrassing welcome. This was my first ever experience with Rob, I knew every other worker and they knew my order and name by heart. Everyone stared in disbelief at my traumatized face, the other bartenders that knew me gave me a free shot and reopened the kitchen, made my meal just to repair and apologize for Rob's personal vendetta against me. I didn't even have to complain, the look on my hanging head said it all, I had even tipped the female bartender $100.00 a few days before. I have never been back since and never will as long as Rob works there. I loved cigar bar because I live across the street and walked in every night after my stressful call center late shift job, i dealt with angry callers at work and my local bartender was worse than all my calls combined. Rob ruined the ceremonial nightcap with wings I always looked foward to after work. All he needed to say was kitchen's closed and I would have settled with a beer and shot then gone home but instead I got this nightmare. So much for a first impression. Listen, I had a great time. The food was good. The prices awesome. Not to mention our sever. She did a great job.

It is set up in a shopping strip with plenty of parking. Walking up I was actually excited because I've heard so much about this place. I didn't look at pictures or reviews. I wanted to form my own opinion.

As I grabbed my ID I walked in and quickly lost my gusto. Okay, huge bar and I see everything I like displayed. I'm there early 845ish so there is obviously no wait at the bar. There's also a little bar as you walk in to the right.

Honestly the crowd looks good. Tables everywhere. We sat at the front, and considering, there was not any annoying traffic. We were immediately taken care of upon arrival. Drinks, food, etc. taken care of.

I know what your thinking. This all sounds great, what's the problem? Lounging. If you are a cigar smoker, do you sit at home at a high table enjoying your stogy? Or do you find a couch in the garage? Maybe you have a man cave where you sit in a lounger or kick back on your couch. I had thought about having myself a claro, but after walking around I found myself at a loss for a desirable spot to enjoy one.

The manager made a scene after she didn't believe my friend was the same person from her license. She spoke to her from the very beginning in a very rude manner. Frankly I'm not sure why she has that job position if that is how she approaches people? So disappointed because my friend showed her, her PASSPORT as well and the manager had the nerve to say that she still didn't believe her. This experience was the worst, it really felt like she had something against my friend since we were approached by her. I know that we aren't the only group of people who have experienced this. Before we left, we talked to the security guard and even he didn't understand why the manager was straight out denying my friend services, if HE had even seen my friend there many times before. This manager needs to be replaced immediately because this business will continue to lose MY business and many others.
