My sister in law and I went a few days ago and we were disappointed by their treatment towards us. One of the chef kept looking and glancing at both of us the second we stepped inside. I came here with my husband a few weeks back (my first time but he's regular), and she came with her friends a few days back, so I thought he did that since he recognized us. And they all know my sister in law since she comes here regularly for years. After the nice waitress sat us down and we were midway in ordering, the same chef came to our station and told us that since some customers don't leave a tip properly after a big order (he said $300), they're going to apply a 15% tip on the order. We agreed wholeheartedly and understood why they did that since some people don't tip. However I noticed later that they didn't tell this to any of the other customers. And isn't it the waitress who should be telling us this? Why is the chef who isn't even serving us, informing us of this? Why didn't our chef tell us? I started to feel uncomfortable after realizing and I immediately lost my appetite while eating. It's very sad and disappointing because my family and friends have been coming here regularly for so many years and told me great things about this place, and this was my second time here. They love heian.
We may have tipped less once or twice, because everyone has finance issues. Does that mean that we can't come enjoy their food just become we can't tip well a few times? Did they ignore the fact that we tipped well the other times? It's very gross to force specific customers to tip just because of this. It seems like they'd rather not have people come if we can't tip to their own specific standards. They did live up to the hype my family made regarding their food, but I'm afraid they lost loyal customers after this interaction. I do hope they don't make anyone else feel like this just for a mere tip, it is sad that they're true to the stereotypical toxic tipping culture. I gave a three star because their food and service is good. I think they should consult within themselves if they feel like they're getting payed less instead of forcing customers to fill in the gap of their income. No customer deserves to go through this...
Read moreHad dinner here with a friend on Sunday, June 4th, around 7pm. Food was okay, but service was really lacking and quite disappointing.
When I arrived at the restaurant around 6:40pm, the bar was full and there was one table with four seats open. There was no greeting from any of the staff and there was another lady standing right by the door waiting. For about five minutes, I was just standing there with no idea if I should be seating myself or if I'm supposed to wait for the staff to be seated. I ended up asking the lady standing by the door with me and she said that she was waiting to be seated as well. During this entire time, the staff making the rolls looked at me, but no acknowledgement was made. After waiting a bit more, a staff member finally came over to ask how many people were in my party.
While we were seated and eating, the staff was pretty distracted the entire time and focused solely on a couple sitting on the other end of the bar. I'm assuming it's because the couple were taking pictures of the food to be posted online. But even so, there are still other customers in the restaurant. We were kind of just left sitting there, waiting for the staff. I watched a staff member make our rolls before grabbing a cup of sake and walking straight back to the couple to chat. The father of a family across from us was also watching the staff. Not only has this service been disrespectful to the other customers, it's also unprofessional.
They opened fairly recently, so hopefully their service will get better, but until then, we're going to stick to...
Read more10/10 experience from start to finish! My first comment when we sat down, was “wow, everything looks and smells so fresh”. And the food definitely lived up to that standard. I loved the community seating vibe, with the seats facing the chefs. Each server was extremely attentive, and every staff member was friendly and service-oriented. I felt like we had been there before simply from the ambience and service alone, despite being my first time dining with them. Every menu recommendation was excellent, and the sake that was suggested was fantastic.
My favorites were the crab and salmon hand rolls, and the Chutoro sushi. I really enjoyed the piece on the far right of our stair flight, but I can’t remember what it was exactly (sad). The main attraction was definitely the sushi stairs.
I love that this establishment has brought such an authentic and interpersonal place to McKinney. It is definitely worth the drive if you aren’t local, but if you live close by you need to check them out.
They have only been open for a few months, but you would never guess it. Thank you to all the staff members, keep doing what...
