I’m writing this review because I want to help the next customer(s) that may potentially order take out. Hasn’t even been 5 minutes after receiving this plate. Might be one of the most disappointing experiences I’ve had with a restaurant.
Before ordering I read the ratings and thought I made the right decision to try this place. WRONG!
Ordered the chicken strip plate with onion rings and bake beans. Young lady at the register informed me that they did not have any onion rings, fine. I substituted for cold slaw. However, the young lady CHARGED me for 8oz coleslaw. Well, I didn’t think that I would be charged anything. If you are out of an item, I would assume it’s simply a substitute (free). Could have informed me about the order costing more.
The lady also mentioned that if you are using a debit/credit card the order is more expensive. That’s out of her control. However, I think that policy should be reviewed and changed.
After just test tasting the plate, one bite of everything, it…..was…terrible,saying this respectfully. The coleslaw tasted like it was not well prepared, tasted like it was only vinegar in it. Bake beans was straight out of the can and probably cooked inside a microwave. Chicken strips were just fried with a little too much salt. Hushpuppies were very bland. All in all i will not return to eat there. This was my first time ever eating there and I was really looking forward to it. Spending almost 20$ (19.69) I would expect my plate to be really good.
With all that being said, eat here at your own risk. I would not want anyone to spend that much money here knowing it’s not going to be a great plate, especially if you are hungry....

I went in for a BBQ sandwich and a soda. The woman who took my order was very nice, friendly and efficient. She asked if I'd like to have a milkshake, also. I said no for now but had planned to get one to go. The service was quick and the young lady who brought it to me was very nice. As I ate I overheard two employees talking about how the milkshake machine was broken and, if I heard right, it has been broken for a while. My sandwich was a nice size full of meat and with plenty of slaw. However, the pork was as cold as if it had been in a cooler. The 3 stars that I give are based on the helpful friendly staff and the love I have for one of this area's most respected older establishments. I hope the meat is hot the next time I stop by.
That was then, this is now, Oct. 19, '24. This is the first time I've had breakfast at any Hursey's. I was looking forward to it. The young lady that took my order was very nice, patient and extra helpful. The service was quick. I had the regular gravy biscuit. The flavor and temperature were great. The gravy was a nice consistency. The biscuit was tough, chewy and crispy. This was served on a small 3-partition Styrofoam plate that was uncomfortable to eat from. The fork and knife were plastic. I'm in town for business and thought "Hey man, when in NC, you have to try the BBQ". I should have known when I walked in and didn't smell smoke that there was a problem. Then when I asked if they had Brisket, they said no. So I ordered a rib plate with slaw and green beans. Food came out quickly so that was good. I was a little nervous when I tasted the BBQ sauce on the table because it was so full of vinegar flavor that my face puckered. And I have to say, I actually like vinegar based sauce. The ribs were dry but covered in sauce. There was NO smoke to them. I think they were oven baked. The slaw was not good. I ate more of my green beans and hush puppies than anything. I threw away more than half of my $22 order.
My buddy got fried flounder that was under cooked and slimy and still had the skin on. He threw away most of his food too.
I have to say this was the worst BBQ I have ever had. I'm a backyard pitmaster from Texas so I know what this should taste like. I think I would have been happier with sloppy joe for lunch. I hate to leave a bad review, but this was truly terrible and I will not be going back there.
