I hate to have to write this review because Gus’ chicken has always been my favorite place to go to when I want some good, fried chicken! I patronize all locations in Memphis and never really had an issue…but my most recent experience was a 0/10, trash customer service! I recently just started working right up the street from this location and was excited about going for lunch only for them to mess up my order, which was not the real issue for me because I understand that mistakes do happen. However, I called them after making it back to work and seeing that my order was incorrect (missing a piece of chicken) and they told me that I could come back to get a piece of chicken. I began to explain to them that I was on my lunch break and did not have time. I called weeks later because I was planning to go back for lunch and was told that they did not see my name on the list so I asked for a manager to call me back. The lady was very rude and told me that she can’t make the manager do anything and that she was not available at that moment. Minutes later the store manager called me back and before I could even explain to her my experience she kept cutting me off, was very rude and nasty and basically called to argue with me instead of trying to listen to my issue and see if we could resolve the issue at hand. She never let me get a word out when I tried to explain to her that the young lady I originally spoke with was rude. She began to say, “Oh no she was not rude because I was standing right here listening to the conversation!”. All I wanted was my order replaced, I’ve spend thousands with this restaurant and have receipts to prove it and I’ve been a customer since the grand opening years ago! They clearly rather argue with their long time customers over a piece of chicken instead of replacing it which wouldn’t cost them anything to do so! After our conversation she told me that she was not going to replace it at all and she hung up. The worse customer service ever! From now on I go to Forest Hill Irene location and Germantown where they are much more...

Somewhere between Beale Street and the end of the American Dream, I stumbled—sun-blinded, starving, and vibrating with the high-frequency hum of Southern humidity—into the sacred temple of Gus’s Fried Chicken.
This is not food. This is revelation. This is jazz for your taste buds. It’s the delta blues playing in your mouth with a brass section made of cayenne and memory. The chicken, golden and blistered like it fought its way out of a cast iron warzone, comes out piping hot and hits you like a thunderclap—crispy, tender, juicy, and singing with spice like it was kissed by Memphis fire itself. It doesn’t ask permission. It kicks in the door.
The crust crackles like a snare drum. The meat beneath it? So moist it should be criminal. You will weep. Not tears of sadness, no—but of gratitude. This bird was born for greatness and knew it. Every bite tastes like it marched straight out of a Southern Gothic novel, hand-battered and fearless.
And the sides—oh dear God, the sides. The mac and cheese is humble, unpretentious, comfort made edible. The baked beans? Sweet and dark like a Faulkner subplot. Even the slaw—cold, crisp, a whisper of vinegar—is the palate’s parachute after the poultry’s plunge.
The decor is a fever dream of fried chicken evangelism—no-frills, unapologetic. You’re not here for chandeliers. You’re here to speak to the soul of the South.
Gus’s doesn’t care who you are. Rock stars and long-haulers, tourists and prophets—all are equal in the House of the Hot Bird.
So go. Don’t hesitate. Drive through the night, if you must. Gus’s in Memphis isn’t a stop. It’s a rite of passage. Just be warned: once you’ve had the gospel according to Gus, the Colonel will taste like a soggy footnote in a book nobody reads anymore.
Amen, Gus....
Read moreJust rolled into Memphis for my 60th birthday weekend. It was suggested that we have dinner at Gus Chicken. I really wasn’t feeling chicken, however, I succumbed to my hunger pangs.
Upon entering the establishment, we were seated immediately. The server came right over and took our drink orders. Now Gus is spicy fried chicken not regular fried chicken. This is where I became concern. I like spicy but not so spicy I can’t enjoy it without “water logging” myself. I inquired of our server of “how spicy” this chicken would be and he assured me it was a “mild spicy”. I proceeded with my order of 2 piece dark with coleslaw and baked beans. I also ordered so fried green tomatoes.
The fried green tomatoes arrived within minutes and I went to work. Well my whole table did since I shared with them. They were pleasantly surprised and grateful. One of the recipients had never had fried green tomatoes and love it. She was absolutely correct. The tomatoes were delicious. They were beautifully brown, fried and seasoned to perfection. Next came the main event. The amount of food was average which was what I needed. Again I went to work. The chicken was well seasoned, juicy and with a little “kick” to it if you get my drift. I did use a little ketchup to simmer down the spiciness. The mayonnaise based coleslaw was crunchy, sweet and tasty. The baked beans were average as I have had better. Nevertheless, the meal was an overall 4.5. The server was engaging and attentive. The atmosphere was inviting and chill. I will definitely be visiting Gus World Famous Fried...
