Disgusting. In every way. My group experienced terrible service, and the blandest, tasteless, mushy, old food. There were ZERO redeeming qualities about this awful, awful, awful place..... To begin, I was here with two diners new to Indian food, which was so sad for them. The service was atrocious. Our menus were thrown on the table by an extremely rude and disgruntled older man. Noone came to check on us for about 10 minutes. The restaurant was 1/3 full with plenty of empty tables throughout. Our buser/water person came by and refilled our water glasses, when we inquired about whether to order from the menu or get the buffet he explained that he couldn't speak very much English. Judging from his accent I could tell he was probably Hispanic, so I asked in Spanish about ordering. I miswrote above, because this young man was so nice to me when he explained in Spanish that we could order off the main menu. So, he was the only redeeming experience here. Sadly, (again) we watched the grumpy old man (we were calling him Grumplor at this point) angrily berate the young water person who I spoke with. This was really disheartening to say the least. While we waited to order, I did my best to explain the dishes/options to my newbie Indian diners. I did this because we were all afraid to ask anything of Grumplor. Our order: Chicken Curry (dinner thali), Malai Kofta (dinner thali), and one Mayuri combo. It doesn't even matter what they were called. They all tasted of the same old blandness. I ordered my dish "spicy"; you can get spicier food at Taco Bell, and I only know this from eating there when I was a child. Everything tasted the SAME, and that was this- BLAND, BLAND, BLAND. No subtleness of spice, no chili heat, textureless, just nothingness. In fact, it all tasted out of the can, like those horrific premade "Indian dinners" that come in the frozen section of the international grocery store (just that those are better than this slop!!!!!). Even the naan was a pathetic version of one of my favorite bread dishes in the world. To put an explanation point on this epically bad meal we were brought complimentary bowls of the worst rice pudding I've ever tasted- a warm, milky, disgusting mess of tapioca(!) and mushy rice. This final insult was more in the realm of barf than food. First impressions are important. This one was absolutely horrific, and at $50 for three adults without any beverages other than water, a complete and utter ripoff. My suggestion: I am certain that with the right recipes, ingredients, and time the average home cook could make Indian food 10 times better than this pathetic excuse for a restaurant. Shame on you Mayuri for giving the Beautiful cuisine of India a bad reputation, and shame on you for ruining my friends first Indian food dining experience. I would never, ever return here. Mayuri Indian Restaurant has become my go-to spot for the healthiest and most flavorful Indian dishes. They have the lowest price in Memphis with the highest quality in the healthy composition of their dishes. What sets this place apart is the owners' dedication to accommodating dietary preferences without compromising taste. As someone who follows a vegan diet—not vegetarian but strictly vegan—I was thrilled by their willingness to adapt their menu to meet my needs.
Initially, they were unfamiliar with vegan-style preparation, but after explaining that it meant no dairy or animal-based ingredients, they went above and beyond to create dishes that were both authentic and plant-based.
After October 2023, following a 30-day fast, I broke my fast with their Thali dish at Riverdale Park. It was a memorable experience, one that I shared in a widely viewed YouTube video. The owner’s generosity stood out when he added extra Channa Masala to my order, saying with a smile, "I know you like Channa Masala." Instead of Naan, he suggested Pooris, and I trusted his judgment—it was the perfect choice.
Over time, I became something of a "guinea pig" for their innovative preparations. The owner surprised me with coconut curries and other creative modifications, each of which was a 10/10 in taste, texture, and health consciousness. Their commitment to tailoring dishes for health-minded customers like me is truly commendable.
I was thrilled to see the buffet reintroduced in January 2024, a tradition that first brought me to Mayuri in 2012. After a hiatus in 2020, it’s wonderful to see the buffet back in action, offering a range of options like Idly, Poori, Naan, Dosa, Channa Masala, Spinach Dal Curry, Sambar, and either spinach or onion pakoras, along with other vegan and vegetarian-friendly dishes. The buffet is available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11 AM to 2:30 PM, and it’s perfect for trying a variety of dishes.
Pro Tip: Come hungry, but pace yourself! Small portions eaten slowly—starting with vegetables and chutneys, followed by proteins, and finishing with carbs—can make the experience even more enjoyable.
The consistency of the food is remarkable, thanks to the chefs' 40+ years of experience. While the dishes are best enjoyed fresh at the restaurant, their to-go options hold up surprisingly well for up to two hours—something I’ve tested on busy days. Whether dining in or ordering out, the quality and attention to detail are always evident.
Mayuri Indian Restaurant offers a special combination of health-conscious preparation and authentic flavors that makes it a standout destination. From the buffet to the à la carte menu, every bite reflects the care and expertise of their team. If you’re in the area, I can’t recommend this...
Read moreI was pleased with the quality of the food. I'm in Jackson TN and ordered takeout for a party of 7 adults. When placing my order over the phone I explained that everyone in my party was either a desi (i.e. of Indian origin) or very closely familiar and well accustomed to Indian food. Therefore I requested them to prepare our food accordingly, (i.e. very spicy) which they did.
My friends and I think the Indian food from this restaurant is good. Everyone really enjoyed the food that we ordered, which was the following: Garlic Nans with cilantro added to it, Chicken Tika Masala w/ gravy, Butter Chicken w/gravy, and Chicken Biryani.
We also ordered the Tandoori Chicken which was garnished nicely and appropriately with onions and lemons. They also added 2 or 3 thin slices of cucumber and carrot to it, which all was nicely balanced and definitely complemented the tandoori chicken. They also generously provided us separately on the side mango pickle chutney, white rice, plain nans, and more nicely sliced raw onions and lemons.
I think with any kind of food, such seemingly small things actually matter a lot and especially with Indian food. Hence when making and preparing Indian cuisine, I think details matter a lot and make a big difference in the overall experience, quality, and enjoyment.
Again, I and the people in my party were all very pleased with our food from this restaurant. Therefore if your in the Memphis area I recommend trying this Mayuri restaurant as the food is good and also...
