Amazing fish and chips!!! Best I've had for the quality and price. Takeout and outdoor seating on quiet street.
Found this place while driving and noticed their takeout menu sign off the street. $15 fish and chips. They were just about closed, so I planned to try when open. I wanted fish and chips before I left the shore, but most places use flounder...I prefer haddock or cod. I almost went to a boardwalk fish restaurant but after reading reviews that people claimed the fish was already frozen fish filets, I figured it would be best to get from an actual fish market. Good choice. The fish was breaded, not fried, and perfect. Fries great. Kind of firm though. The coleslaw was homemade but felt it was lacking vinegar and bland. The tartar sauce was also homemade and I actually liked it... I don't find tartar sauce appealing. I mixed some in the coleslaw and it was better.
The restaurant is on a back street in the actual town of Cape May Courthouse. They also offer outdoor dining in a pleasant Cafe like setting, so if you want good fish and chips and also a quiet reprieve from the boardwalk/hotel/ocean vacationers everywhere, this is your place- however I was there around 7:20 and they close at 8.
If you opt for takeout like I did, the library has a beautiful garden area with picnic tables to sit down. Photo from...
Read moreAfter last year's wonderful experience, I decided to splurge to enjoy a seafood night. I walked in the last open hour and I was pleasantly surprised to see the outdoor terrace full, which means that they must be a really good place for seafood! Service was slow even as I saw many employees around. I was waiting 20 minutes to pick up a small fish filet and a dozen oysters. I was extremely disappointed with the price/quality ratio. The price of the shucked oysters were up to par as in some local establishments, yet when I got home I found those swimming in a dark pool of disgusting debris which got all inside the flesh. They didn't even bother to give them a quick rinse, besides it being a common sense courtesy, it's plain disrespectful to serve seafood this nasty after paying a premium price. They had to go in the trash. I also picked up a half pint container of cherry tomatoes and was surprised to see I was charged 4.99 for those, of course the price was nowhere to be seen ahead, and I had plenty of time to try to find it. I like to support local farmers, but that is absolutely unreasonable.
Again, I am glad to see the market doing so well and I respect the effort that the owners put in upgrading the store, yet I will not patronize this establishment because I'm afraid to risk my hard worked money going in the...
Read moreWe found this little gem by accident. We were in Cape May and just didn't find a perfect seafood place that was open at 3pm. We looked on Google Maps and Matthew's came up. We drove all the way over and found it to be a fish market. The outdoor seating was literally set up outside the store and so we went. My kid ordered the crab cakes and I got the salmon. Both were outstanding. The crab cakes were full of crab and not filler. The salmon piece was a bit too small but hey, I'm on a diet so it was fine. The French fries were perfect as well. During our time seated, there was an endless stream of customers going to the market which tells you- this place is goood! If you are able to go off the beaten path and all the touristy spots, this place is worth trying. Prices...
