April 4, 2023 - The Main Cup in Middletown offers good food, splash of history, plus a whiff of country farm air, then top it off with some homemade ice cream ! It’s been a few years since coming back to Middletown, you can’t beat the drive along the Old National Pike through Farm Country !
Originally Charles F. Main’s 1892 Meat Market, then added Ice Cream shop in 1911. . . Bob & Kimberly Brenengun started renovations in 2007. With a few historic loans, a New Main’s Cup ( coffee house) opened in 2013. It’s grown and become popular among the locals.
Our party of 6 arrived for lunch, and were seated by Sarah quickly. The Main Cup is open Monday to Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm !

Everyone was pleased with our lunch orders! The Blackened Salad was excellent! As was my friend’s Grilled Reuben sandwich! I enjoyed my Grilled Rachel stuffed with sliced Turkey with Cole slaw on rye bread! My wife loved her Mediterranean Salad ! The salmon and strawberry salad was prepared perfectly! My only suggestion would be to provide more local Maryland beers, especially for those visiting who enjoy tasting craft beers !
The restaurant had plenty of room, and rooms for all occasions! Maybe a group of friends celebrating a birthday or work retirement? Maybe a softball team relaxing after a tournament? Maybe a holiday party among neighbors? There is outside patio under cover dining too! Frederick local newspaper awarded The Main Cup in 2019 & 2020 Best in Frederick ! Yea! Don’t forget the Ice Cream !
Several President’s have passed along the Old National Pike , and stopped here in Middletown. George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Dwight Eisenhower have traveled this road! The old Zion Lutheran Church across the street is a landmark since 1859. The town is changing with new housing up the street, but slow down and enjoy the old homes along Main Street in Middletown. . . maybe stop for “a bite to eat” at...
Read morePleasantly surprised! I read the reviews before going as I know ownership had changed hands and sometimes it takes a while to reach a new equilibrium. I parked in the last spot available in the lot behind the restaurant during happy hour and because there are other local businesses, I imagine that’s why it was full there at 4:45pm. It was a gorgeous day so we opted to sit outside. Our server, Aiden was wonderful. Friendly, knowledgeable, & professional. He didn’t skip a beat. All of the food we ordered(drinks, appetizer, salad then entree’s) came out at the right times.(sometimes at restaurants, you wait a long time for the apps & salad and 2 minutes after you get it, all of the entrees arrive). We had the fried pickles as the app. It was good-I’ve never had them and I thought they would be brinier but they were fairly mild but a nice crisp coating and a dipping sauce. We went on a Monday so I ordered the prime rib special. I’m a self proclaimed prime rib snob so my deal breakers are, “it had to be rare and they have to have raw horseradish.” Aiden assured both were available. It came with a salad(I opted for Caesar), broccolini, and mashed potatoes. The salad was good, fresh & ample. I took half home as I needed to leave room for dessert as we were celebrating a birthday. The prime rib dinner arrived and I was pleasantly surprised at the really nice sized piece of rare with au jus and horseradish on the side, broccolini (perfectly cooked-not overdone and still crisp), and mashed potatoes. Lately, I’ve noticed because of the cost of food, prime rib cuts have become thinner but this was not the case. This was probably 1.25” thick. Super nice and made the $40 price worth the splurge (for me)! It was not overseasoned(some places have so much salt on the outside and although I love salt, my blood pressure does not! The broccolini was perfect. The mashed potatoes were a little bland so some au jus on top fixed that. I did take some of everything home so I could have room for dessert. It did not disappoint. I got the lemoncello & marscapone cake and it was delicious. It arrived on a drizzle of raspberry sauce with a dollop of whipped cream. It was delicious! I’ll be back. It’s good I don’t live closer as I’d be there...
Read moreWent yesterday for lunch with a friend. This is one old building, taking you back in time. We arrived early afternoon after the lunch crowd had finished and left on their merry way. The spacious and well designed dining room was about 1/4 full with patrons at about 2:00.We were greeted an seated immediately I ordered the Ruben sandwich with the daily special side of delicious sweet tomato pasta salad. I wish I could have gotten as much as I wanted. My Ruben sandwich was the best one I've ever had!!! The bread was grilled nicely crisp with no evidence of butter or oil. IMO a grilled sandwich of any kind that's dripping a slimey mess, totally destroys the quality of the sandwich you desired. There was more than plenty of meat and just the right amount of 1000isle dressing and krout with melted Swiss cheese. The outside of the sandwich was surprisingly dry, which made my Ruben a 5 star from the start. It deserved 10 but the scale only goes to 5. It was such a thick sandwich, I had a hard time fitting it into my mouth, so I used my fork to eat some of the inside, to get it down to the size of a normal sandwich. The service was very good. About half way through the meal, they checked back to see if everything was alright. That's when you should be asked instead of the all too many times they ask you when you're done eating a ready for the check. . I'd be happy to return and return to make this one of my regular...
