Equator Coffee + Tea — Restaurant in Millbrae

THE WORST CHAI I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. I ordered a simple drink: hot chai latte with oat milk. When the “barista” began steaming the milk I could hear a high pitched screaming sound inside the metal container filled with oat milk. She was burning the milk. I was a barista at a cafe a while ago and thats something they teach you. You heat up the first half of the milk and then put the steamer down to the bottom so that it’s not screaming for it’s life.

I knew it was all down hill from there.

Needless to say I couldn’t drink any of the chai. It had a burned, acrid taste. It was scorching hot and I went to walk over to take it back and get a refund but the line had gotten longer and I was afraid I was going to miss my flight + I didn’t feel like dealing with it. I shouldn’t have to.

How hard is it to make a chai? Not hard at all.

Are my standards for chai lattes too high? I don’t think so (I would have been content with one made at Starbucks).

Do I need to recalibrate my expectations and never order a chai from this place again? Yes. Definitely yes.

Dear owner: the last thing hurried travelers want to deal with is the unnecessary snarkiness of employees. It is 9:33 am on Tuesday, October 22. The ladies at the cash register were lovely, polite and friendly. The lady at the back who warmed up my pastry was just as kind and accommodating. But “Leilani” (if that is her name) who serves the coffee was rude for no reason. My name is often mispronounced and misspelled and usually when I approach the counter To pronounce my name and pick up my order, people appreciate the fact that I’m paying attention. Not this chick. Wrong order, I asked first to replace my pastry because it wasn't what I paid for. I waited a bit as they seemed overwhelmed. When I get my coffee, I asked again to replace my pastry (asked for a banana bread, see the picture 🙈). They asked me to do the line again, I explained to them that I didn't have the time as my boarding was about to start. They gave me attitude and repeated to do again the line.
