Words cannot describe how amazing this place is. I came there by chance on a beautiful Saturday afternoon looking for lunch and stumbled upon this place! I got a grilled cheese, chicken tenders, and milkshake not knowing what to expect. Let me tell you the sizes of each of the items were portioned amazingly for such an affordable price! The whole atmosphere brought me back to my childhood going to the local ice cream shop where I grew up that was a community hub for everyone. Really brought back that old summertime vibe you don’t see anymore. While I did have to wait about an hour for the food it was well worth the wait and I can see why this place is so popular. The first bite out of the grilled cheese just filled my mouth this that authentic cheddar flavor you can only find with the high quality cheese you expect from Wisconsin cheese! About 7 seconds later I didn’t realize I was already half way done with the first half of the sandwich as I just devoured it. Same goes for their chicken tenders which are so crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside which is a hard combo to get perfect as every other restaurant just rushes tenders and you get either crunchy and dried out or moist and a little soggy, but whoever the chef in the kitchen is does it perfectly! As for the milkshake oh it’s amazing and one of the best I’ve had in quite some time and I consider myself a food tourist. Mixed perfectly together my caramel milkshake was thick, but yet so easy to drink out of a straw. The flavors were mixed beautifully together instead of some areas missing out on flavor. As the kind staff said behind the counter they take time with their food because they care and do it old fashioned. I’d wait another hour again for the amazing food I had and for the kind staff who treated an out of town traveler like myself with such kindness! I travel to Milwaukee often for events or vacations and I can guarantee that this is going to be one of the stops I MUST make each time! Highly recommend to anyone looking for amazing food made with care at a price that gives you the most for your money! There might be a lot of places in Milwaukee to go for food, but as someone who loves food this is the spot I would recommend for anyone looking for one of the last true restaurant with dedication made into your meal! A big thank you to the staff who served me the other day! I will be back eagerly hungry...
Read moreReally really lovely place. I haven't come to Milwaukee before and wanted some custard really bad, so I looked on Google Maps to find a good spot and this place came up. Right away, the look of place, the atmosphere, really drew me in. It's classy without being fancy, engaging while still being calm, and a really enjoyable place. It's an outdoor-seating restuarant and it's such a lovely day today to sit outside. The custard was lovely, and it's one of the only places I've been where they give you enough hot fudge. Everywhere else scimps on it. The custard was really smooth, good taste. The guy running the counter was real sweet and it always really nice to see someone cheerful at their job. Definitely bookmarking this place to visit next time! I'll have to get...
Read moreI could not believe that this place was still here, after 30 years!!! I had to stop in. It's on its second owner since Fred & his sons owned it (I grew up as a neighbor with them). They don't have dip tops anymore, one of my faves as a kid, but there custard was AMAZING! I had a hot fudge sundae, a small but there portion was large. Also had a cheeseburger & fries. It was ok, I was a bit let down. The meat was big, as in round, but very thin. Fries were a bit undercooked, still white-ish & most were soggy. I can imagine that parking at Freds can be a challenge, especially, when it's busy. Small lot. At least I felt safe there as a police precinct was still across the street! I'll try it again, not anytime...
