"The Seven Stars" has heart with excellent, "stick-to-your-ribs" Mexican cuisine. This place is legit, a little hidden gem in a tiny strip mall. The best refried beans. They have all the usuals like tacos, burritos, and breakfast for lunch dishes like chilaqiiles and huevos con chorizo. Some special dishes really shine on this menu like great pambazos, huaraches, chimichangas, chile rellenos, and an amazing coctel de camarón! They also have a delicious house made specialty seafood soup. And one of my favorite Mexican dishes, Caesar Salad. Also a scrumptious Nopal Ranchero Salad. Did I mention the refried beans? Wow! Do they know how to do beans? Heck yeah! It is a small place, about 10 tables and a small, well stocked bar. Definitely have some of the super fresh guacamole, homemade salsas, and chips while you wait for your entrees. If you can't eat there, carry-out and delivery are available. They also have a fantastic truck, usually parked on Chase...
Read moreSo I tried this place because it was close to where I was at. The young lady that works there was very nice. I got the steak tacos with onion and cilantro. These tacos have to be some of the worst I've ever had. The state had absolutely no taste whatsoever. There was no type of seasoning at all. It was just steak cooked in what I think is oil because it was very greasy. The cilantro had absolutely no taste. I'm blown away at how bad these are I've never had steak tacos that had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. A waste of $15. I figured the rice and beans would have some flavor but nope. The rice literally tastes like it's out of a box and the beans from a can with no seasoning or flavor at all. I've eaten from a lot of Mexican restaurants actually probably 100, I travel a lot and this has to be probably the worst if not the second worst I've ever eaten. This is not authentic...
Read moreArguably some of the best Mexican food in Milwaukee. I judge Mexican food by two competing standards - is it "cocina tipica" - the food that your abuelita would serve you in her own home (on the one hand) and for creativity and flare (on the other). It is hard to do both well at the same time. SALSA - the salsa at 7 Estrellas is different, hard to describe and somehow compelling. SEA FOOD - on a good day, their coctel de camaron is hard to beat. RICE - I don't like rice that much. And anyway, it's hard to get it in the style of my abuelos - more yellow or white than orange Spanish rice. Again 7 stars can usually hit it. TACOS - my kid is a huge critic, he loves their tacos. AMBIENCE - one of the hardest things of all. I feel like I'm home - not like at my house, but at a place where I could kick it for a couple of hours and just eat and talk. ...
