Poppy Bakery — Restaurant in Milwaukee

Wow wow wow wow wow. This is just what Milwaukee needs. An incredible bakery right in the heart of a lovely lively area.

I am told that you can usually judge a great bakery based on their chocolate chip cookies, and this one is far and away one of the best I’ve had in my time living here. Look at those chocolate layers! The outside is delightfully crisp and the inside has a perfectly chewy texture. It has wonderful flavors of caramelized sugar and vanilla, and the flaky salt on top puts a bow on it.

I also tried the bacon and blackberry brioches which both had a perfect spongy texture. The cheese bacon and scallions were so satisfying on the one, and the streusel topping, jam and sweet cheese on the other even had a mild herbaceous note, like rosemary or anise.

I’d also like to note how friendly the staff was. You can tell that they are excited to be there and to share their treats with the city. I exchanged a pleasant chat with the woman behind the counter, while also receiving my order very quickly. This place also has a viewing window from the street where you can see the artisans at work.
