I have been a die hard fan of Gramma's since in was on Holgate 20 years ago and was happy when it moved into Milwaukie and happy that it has stayed in the family all of this time and the quality has pretty much remained consistent. The only food complaint is that the biscuits are always rock hard. The gravy is one of the best in Portland but I've resorted to just ordering a side for my hashbrowns. Other than that the food is mostly homemade and delicious. The pies are amazing. BUT . . . the service has been so unsatisfactory for me lately and I don't think I'll be back. 1. One day they were having trouble getting hashbrowns so instead (without telling me) they have me horrible dry chunks of potato that they had bought frozen. Hashbrowns are my jam so I'll have to say I was disappointed, but things happen. I just wish I'd known so I could have ordered something else. Then my medium eggs were over hard so I couldn't eat them either. The very nice lady noticed that I hadn't eaten anything but the sausage and toast and told me she'd make it right at the register. When I checked my receipt she gave me $1. off, of a $12. breakfast. . Wow. The next time I went in I was happy to see potato pancakes as a special. I love potato pancakes and it's hard to find them since Hale's closed so I ordered them. Well, they weren't potato pancakes, they were hash-browns with peppers and onion, they did not hold together at all. I actually didn't mind really because I love hash-browns but I told the server (nicely) about it because I was afraid that they were going to get complaints from Latke lovers. I told her that they usually put some kind of binding agent like eggs and or pancake mix or flour to help them hold together. She said they did put eggs in them and we had kind of a back and forth and she said "I guess maybe I don't know what potato pancakes are then". Well that might be and this was all ok until . . . she went to the doorway of the kitchen and relayed everything that I said to the cook, loudly and in a very patronizing way. The whole restaurant could hear it. It was SO humiliating! I felt belittled and embarrassed and I will...
Read moreWonderfully quaint, family owned and run restaurant. Small singing area inside but set up to maximize diners without being crowded. Small outdoor area as well.
Arrived around 10:30 and had a very short wait after signing in. Staff was very quick and efficient at seating, order taking, serving, and cleaning.
Ordered the western omelette hash browns with sour dough toast) with decaf coffee and water. Hugh portions of very good food. If you love the butter from crust to crust you'll love breakfast here. Coffee was strong and bold with fresh creamer pitcher for each table.
Wouldn't recommend for a single diner during a busy time. Shortly after I was seated a table of 13 showed up, then a table of 8 with multiplie 2-4 also. Very popular and singles take valuable multi tops.
At that point servers seemed to forget me as they were very busy. One walked by, looked at my coffee cup (almost empty) then continued to other tables. I was by the door so it wasn't as though I was tucked in a corner. Being in a high traffic area had a similar effect though so I get it.
Knowing how turned tables equal dollars I placed my card on the edge of my table and waited to catch someone. Asked for a box and to go ahead and charge whatever the bill was (why bother printing and returning, no need to waste their time). CC receipt and box dropped off without a word.
Packed my food, signed my check and said thank you to server and left so they could get more diners in. As I said, they are fast and efficient!
My original server mentioned that veterans get a free coffee so I will return with my spouse to try the B&G in the future...
Read moreI feel bad because the first time we came here I told the owner I was going to leave a 5 start review. But apparently I forgot to after our vacation was over.
The first time we came here the place just felt like home. The décor on the walls and the friendly staff just welcomed us. And the food? OMG the FOOD! Everything tasted as though it came in fresh that very day! I have chickens so I know what farm fresh eggs taste like. Therefore I can taste the flavor of store bought eggs. The eggs here do not taste like the run of the mill restaurant eggs. So either they are sourcing their eggs locally or they are buying high end store bought eggs. The other thing I like about this place is that the portions are not huge. They are just right to fill you up (and I'm a farm girl that works hard).
Yesterday was our second time here. And it felt just like coming home. The place was packed but it was not overly noisy. We were talking about some really bad service we had gotten at a place the night before. Our server walked by and overheard us talking. She was worried that we were talking about this place. We reassured her...NO NO NO! Never THIS place! We would NEVER think that about this place.
I ordered my usual German sausage omelet. My sister, who is not a fan of omelets but does love feta cheese, decided to try the feta and tomato omelet. She was in love the first bite and raved about it off and on the rest of our trip home to Deschutes.
We will be back of course the next time we come to the Portland area. We...
