They need to rename Mel-O-Glaze and call it, Day-Old-Glaze. This morning (a Monday) around 8:30am, I decided to stop in and treat the kids to donuts/cookies before dropping them off for a camp trip. Upon entering the bakery, I noticed there were very few donuts in the cases, many empty trays. In a previous visit, having been sold a stale donut and being disappointed, I quickly was suspicious that they once again were serving donuts that were not made that day. I would have walked out after seeing the many empty trays and then tasting the sample donut holes on the counter, my suspicion was correct, stale! I didn't want to disappoint the kids, therefore I had the kids pick out a donut or a cookie from what few options there was. Since they had no chocolate glazed raised donuts in the case, I asked the employee if she had any more in the back? She went into the back and came out with a tray of donuts. We picked out two chocolate glaze raised donuts, normally if fresh, a specialty of theirs. Upon sitting down to eat the donuts and a cookie in the bakery, my donut was indeed stale as the rest of the bakery items the kids had. To add fuel to the fire, they charged me full price for bakery items that they know are not fresh! I paid $8 for 4 bakery items that are stale. Having been burned now a second time purchasing stale donuts, I will NEVER go back! It's a shame, because its a small business and have supported them, recommended them, and enjoyed their donuts for years. You may get lucky and stop in on a day when they are baking fresh donuts, but buyer beware. I'm taking my business to several other local bakeries next time we want a treat. Shame on you...
Read moreUsed to LOVE this place. We don’t get donuts often and we loved popping in here like once a year. Perhaps my tastes have changed. Their apple fritters were my favorite! Went there a couple of weeks ago mid afternoon only to find that the fritters were sold out. No problem… I’ll get a mix of their cake donuts and a Nutella cinnamon roll. It all tasted like lemon! Not a lemon fan but a chocolate cake donut should taste like chocolate, right? A Nutella roll should taste like Nutella, right? All tasted like lemon icing. And everything tasted super sweet. Way over sweet! Used to love their eclairs but now all they make are the tiny bite sized ones. Disappointing. Gonna have to find a new favorite donut shop, I guess.
Update: Returned to get a fritter. I used to always like them. They had one blueberry fritter left. I bought it and it did not taste good. Bought a turnover as well and it was covered with granulated sugar! Way too sweet. I also agree with other reviewers, the place looks closed. One of the refrigerator cases had apple pie pre cut. The pieces looked all broken and messed up in the containers.
All in all, that was our last attempt at shopping there...
Read moreSome of the best donuts in the Twin Cities. If you're looking to indulge, this is the place. One look at their donuts should be enough to know what you're going to get: a huge dose of fat, sugar, and satisfaction.
I've been to almost every place that sells donuts around here, from Cub and Dunkin to YoYo and Glam Doll. Mel-O-Glaze won't have the crazy designs and flavor combos of the YoYo and Glamdoll types, but they mastered the classics. This is my new favorite donut shop. Like their boxes say, there's a reason they've been around so long (57 years).
Note: the donuts are true doughnuts - they are doughy on purpose! I have NOT had an underbaked donut here. All have been fully cooked and wonderfully doughy.
Note 2: it's true they don't post prices. So ask! As of March 2019, most are $1-2, fritters and fried cinnamon rolls are $3, and some bigger stuff is more. After trying many donut shops/bakeries, each donut at Mel-O-Glaze is easily an above...
