The Sandwich Shop — Restaurant in Modesto

Unfortunately things have changed here. I didn't get the right condiments on the sandwich I had ordered plus the lady who seemed to be in charge had a nasty disposition. My practice is always to be kind and courteous, and it really puzzles me when I'm treated poorly after I ve presented myself as a model customer. We had to return twice . Once to get the correct price and once to get the tomato which was never even mentioned but is advertised as part of the cold sandwiches... Instead of I'm sorry we were handed the tomato along with a curt" no charge". The reason our bill was wrong is that after we ordered the sandwich and the cashier asked if we wanted anything else she said... "No we're going to share".. big mistake . They added a split order charge even though both halves came from one sandwich with no differences in either half, and we simply were telling the cashier that only one sandwich was enough. So don't mention you'll be sharing unless you want separate packaging and don't mind paying another dollar. The other complaint I have is that after over 20 years of eating there, the portions of meat are cut back tremendously. It seemed like more than half. Still the taste and freshness of the food was good which is why I didn't give a one star rating. In the past, I've given this shop 5 stars consistently, and I will probably go there again because I like that sandwich . But rudeness sticks with you, especially if you know you were mindful of how people want to be interacted with. There was never an apology either time we had to return .. for the money and for the tomato. She could have easily said at least on the second trip back to the counter, " Oh no, I'm sorry. " and anything else to make the point that she realized her rude behavior. Instead she just validated her lack of appreciation for our choosing her shop for lunch. There are many places to get good food in Modesto. It will be hard to return here knowing we'll be welcomed with open arms so many other places. In conclusion, yes the food is fine, less meat but still tasty. The parking is right out front, they have restrooms which I didn't visit, and there's a big menu.. two stars but considered giving just one because of the deplorable...

The lady who helped us was cranky but the sandwich was pretty good. I got a pastrami and cheese. The sandwich was served with the pastrami stacked as if it was taken out of a package and heated. Would have been better if the pastrami was separated and "fluffed" a bit. I'll give them a second try but if the cranky lady is still cranky I won't go again. She acted put out that I wanted to buy a sandwich. She also came around to stock napkins and could have easily put another napkin dispenser in our table and put down another dispenser that had already been refilled. Instead she took the napkin dispenser leaving us napkin less. Mind you were at one of 2 tables that had people seated and eating. They have 12-15 tables. She could have substituted another dispenser when she took ours away. You'd understand if you've been there. The sandwiches are messy and we were headed to a movie afterwards. I will say the sandwiches are hearty and they don't skimpy on ingredients but please, fluff your meat and keep...

The best sandwich shop in Modesto! I work a little bit of ways from the shop, so I always fax over my order before heading out to grab my lunch. Worth the price you pay! Makes Subway look like toddler food. You get at least a half a pound of meat on your sandwich. Made to order any way you like it. The ladies are always friendly and fast. The shop is always packed around lunchtime, so finding parking may be difficult. If you need to turn left when exiting the parking lot, you will end up waiting for a lot of traffic. They have unique sandwiches like "the Modesto special" and they also provide catering. I do believe they offer a small selection of sides such as potato and macaroni salad, but their sandwiches are so big and filling, I know I'll never have room for a side, so I've never ordered any.
