Fleckenstein's Bakery — Restaurant in Mokena

I had two cakes made, one in August of 2020 and one just yesterday in 2/6. The first cake was impeccably decorated and the taste was delicious. This time around not so much. The princess doll cake I purchased was dense and it tasted as if it had been frozen and thawed a bit. The butter cream frosting was nasty and had an after taste to it. Which is puzzling because I also had butter cream frosting in the first cake I had made here. I also bought the blooming cupcakes along with the doll cake. The looming cup cakes I got in red velvet. The cake itself was delicious but again that frosting (same that was on the cake) was nasty and off putting. I don’t know what went wrong but I had almost an entire cake left because no one cared for the taste. Also, the young guy that took my order in store didn’t know anything. He didn’t know they had blooming cup cakes, he didn’t know pricing, he didn’t even ask me what flavor of cake I wanted or the type of frosting, he was rushing me and already walking away. I had to stop him and let him know the specifics of what I wanted. My first time there last year the young lady that took my order was very helpful, pleasant, knowledgeable and even helped me with my design look that I wanted. I just was not satisfied this go around. I still gave 3 stars because it seems as though the bakery has good quality cakes but perhaps something went wrong this time around. However, some of the workers in the front need to retain the information needed for when customers inquire about common things when ordering...

We used Fleckenstein's for our wedding in August 2020 and couldn't be happier. Mr. Fleckenstein was so easy to work with and accommodated our changing guest count due to COVID-19 social distancing/max occupancy requirements for our reception seamlessly. He also worked very closely with our florist which allowed us to include real flowers on our cake in a safe and beautiful way! We had four different types of cake - three within our standard wedding cakes (white cake with vanilla buttercream, yellow cake with raspberry filling, and marble cake with chocolate fudge - yum!) and one in our groom's cake (chocolate cake with Oreo buttercream - a chocolate lover's and kids' favorite). All four cakes were covered in vanilla buttercream which we received many compliments on from our guests! The cakes themselves were also beautiful and exactly what we envisioned. My husband, a huge University of Florida fan, loved his cake. We also stated to Fleckenstein's that we did not want the groom's cake to have fondant, and they abided by that and still delivered a perfect looking Gator head! The delivery process was also seamless as Mr. Fleckenstein's staff arrived to our reception venue promptly without complications. I would highly recommend Fleckenstein's for large events such as weddings as well as birthdays or just for a weekday treat. Their birthday cake cupcake and donuts are also...

I would give them no stars if possible. Mr. Fleckenstein was the absolute best in assisting with my wonderful cake orders for my children over the years. I went into the bakery today and Ray Fleckenstein was absolutely horrible with customer service, his reasoning for NOT doing my simple cake request (see image below) and ignorant attitude. It really is a shame that this gentleman has taken over and treats the community's customers this way, especially after all the support I have given them. I'm sad to have to leave this business for our bakery needs due to an individual's poor choices and customer service.

It wasn’t the refusal to do the cake. It was the tone and way I was treated as a customer. This place was wonderful and we went for years. Something changed here where they think customers are a nuisance or they can survive without them. Won’t be going back.

Also, how can you compare a fast food chain who does NOT do customized food? YOU make custom cakes! Custom cookies! You do custom work…that’s what you do. I wasn’t ask for profanity on a cake. I was asking for a simple sports cake for our son’s 10th birthday.

And you DO make cakes like the one I requested…the black and white cakes you sell by the register. My design was just like that cake you already sell at...
