Absolutely recommend to anyone and everyone o/ Stopped by this place due to layover on my trip back from overseas. Brought here by a friend, with two other friends in tow. I got their spicy beef rice bowl (in the stone bowl ofc). Only got a 1, though, not knowing the levels associated with their scaling (apparently 1-3 are normal spiciness, while 4 and 5 are crazy enough to make you sweat, and you can go 2.5, etc.) Also tried their dumplings. Dumplings were delicious. My rice bowl came in, absolutely sizzling. The fumes from the food were pouring into my face. The portion was HUGE. Larger than I expected. LOTS of onions. Lots of meat. Lots of rice underneath. I did not expect the onions though. I dislike onions... HOWEVER. I was invited here by a friendo. He vouched very well for it, so I thought 'what the heck, lets give it a shot.' I loved it. The onions in the bowl were nothing like any onions I've ever eaten. Any complains I ever have about 'em were irrelevant in this situation. The beef was perfect, the sweet potato noodles were delicious. When I finished, the bowl was near spotless, the only remnants being stuff I couldn't manage to scrape off the insides of the bowl, which wasn't very much even then. We were checked up on several times by the guy that seated us, as well as whom I presume was the owner/head chef. Super nice people. But you definitely do need to be vocal about wanting a new drink or what have you, because I was too timid to call for another sparkling water (that, and I was too busy eating the delicious food). Next time I stop by, I'll hold my deal with them and try out a 2.5 spiciness. I'll definitely also ask for extra meat :D (which you CAN do) Eating here seriously makes me want to visit NJ more often xD Oh, I also had fish ice cream. Pretty much an ice cream sandwich, except instead of the sandwich, the stuff holding the ice cream is in the shape of a fish and made up of wafer-tasting-stuff. Good way to finish off ^^

Just want to preface this is not an attack on Koreander as the waiter and service was fantastic, and we overall had a great time! This is more so for the quality of the food. As a Korean I understand that it's difficult to capture the nuance of Korean food especially in a town that is not as well versed in Asian cuisine and so I was willing to be flexible and forget about "authenticity." I was just happy that there was a Korean establishment in town. However I can't help but feel sad about the food I received. I ordered the soft tofu stew and was disappointed to find an overabundance of carrots and pieces of squash in my stew which sweetened the stew to the point where I had to remove it and improvise with the kimchi they had to make the soup more properly "sour". (It would be like including honey or some sort of sweetener in a classic savory chicken soup) For the price of almost $20 I was a little disappointed that the food was made incorrectly and also did not have the right "soul" in it. I am all for chefs of all cultures learning to make Korean food but this felt like a serious lack of knowledge/interest and not the classic taste I was hoping for. I did not see a single Korean in the establishment. Again I had a great service experience overall but this saddened me as I was hoping to find a Korean food establishment closer to home, and not have to travel to Fort Lee/Pal Park. It makes me a little nervous that this may be a lot of people's only perception of Korean food.

Very good Korean food here at Montclair. Been saving this place for a while and finally got a chance to visit. There is street parking only and inside can seat more or less 35 people. Service was quick and I see some ordering for pickups. For our dinner, I tried their pork belly and squid as thats usually my go to for korean rice bowls. The Pork Belly and Squid Dupbap was really flavorful and filling. The mixture was so good especially with good quality rice. You can actually have it served in a hot stone for an additional $2. The Manduguk was good too but I wished there was something like noodle in it lol not sure if you can request to add. The dumplings were also all vegetable. Would have been nice to have a meat one. For the banchan, by the way, others places probably would have more choices offered so the 3 that we had which was potatoes, kimchi and radish didnt seem like much. Still better than nothing but you know. Anyway, there really not a lot of Korean spots by Montclair i dont think, so Koreander is a good place to have some while around the area.

Came in with 5 people, ordered the beef bulgogi and spicy ramen for myself. The beef bulgogi wasn’t the taste I’m used to but it was fine, more savory less sweet. The spicy ramen tasted like package ramen I could make at home, not worth it at all. Soju wasn’t on the menu but was available for $10 a bottle. The person I was with changed her order to the beef bulgogi after seeing the sizzling plate I received and there was some confusion on if she could order it without onions. After 30 minutes of waiting for her food, everyone at the table had finished eating already, she still had not gotten the beef bulgogi yet. She was trying to communicate where her food was to the server (Indian kid I guess) and small Asian lady who worked there, communication was very confusing. The only real response we got was we have to put a vegetable in the beef otherwise it would burn, what vegetables did she want instead of onions (she ordered 30 mins prior and it wasn’t even being made yet?) also why would the beef burn without veggies? I have been to plenty of Korean bbq places and made my own beef bulgogi on the grill and never had an issue. And then the server’s response to why the food had not come out was that it was busy. Which it was busy, but not when we walked in an hour and half before everyone else. Why was her dish not out first before the line of people who came in after us? That’s just common sense. And he had an irritated look on his face and kept talking over me and asking random questions instead of just understanding that we were asking where the food was. Seems to me like he forgot to put the order in and wasn’t upfront about that. He also never asked if we needed a refill on drinks the entire hour and a half we were there. He also forgot my water with my Soju and he never brought the extra spicy sauce I asked for. I think he needs more training as a server. She did eventually get her food 10 mins later btw and it was made w/o onion. Would I came back here?? Maybe for the beef bulgogi but I also don’t live here so I won’t be...

It was my daughter's birthday an she requested this place because we dined in last year. However although the food is very good, the service was not. We were the only African Americans in the entire place an it appeared as though the waiter an the owner could care less. So as we sat , we watched as the other customers received great customer service. So finally we ordered an also asked for the cook. There was a meal he prepared for us before. After a very long wait, he finally came an told us three times, "I AM VERY BUSY". With a strong tone. Without even hearing my concern. As I proceeded to ask him for this dish, he quickly said we don't do that here, I don't know what your talking about. After I explained he walked away in the middle of us talking. No suggestions, or alternatives. He just rushed off. So as we ordered another meal with the waiter, the owner/chef came out to three other tables asking them if they were ok an enjoying themselves. Laughing and all. My daughter said he looked at us, an kept on walking. Our waiter didn't even ask not once. I don't like to play the race card by any means but you do the math. The atmosphere and customer service was very cold an noninviting. We are good enough to give our money, but not to experience the same customer service as everyone else. My 21 year old also noticed it . As I mentioned, it was her birthday an we could of had better service at FRIDAYS!!! So in the future we will go where we are wanted. My regret was not addressing this...
